Peter, Heather, Emily, Brad, Ria A good draft of a philosophy statement was created as a Google doc. Participants will do some editing on the document to get close to a final draft by next meeting (Oct. 30). Folks have taken an initial look at sample standards and shared them (NGSS, Aussie standards, AERO, etc.) We should continue to look through these to see where they align well (or not) with the points we have agreed to for our philosophy statement.

Discussion: adoption/ adaptatio n process strands standards notes, questions, recommendations Renees room Rene Comesotti Patrick McAndrew Paulita Rodriguez Deborah Somerville Douglas von Hollen Luke Davis The LA committee resolved: Adopt the AERO standards for LA as the basis for the LA curriculum To use the NCTE standards for language arts as a source to revise and amend the LA curriculum in areas where there are perceived shortcomings in the AERO standards. (for example AERO fails to adequately address the role of multilingual and multi-cultural students in the LA classroom or clearly address the role of assessment in the LA classroom) There is also a need to address the needs of an international community with our curriculum. For our next meeting members will have reviewed the AERO and NCTE standards, and be prepared to begin revising/developing a draft of standards for LA at LSN as a hybrid of the two sets of standards. We, will need several hours to complete the next stage of this process, possibly requiring some release time, or a more substantial block of time during the next early release day.

Reviewed and agreed on the final version of our "Vision and Philosophy for Teaching & Learning in World Languages" . We decided to use AERO World Language Standards. We also defined the sequence for the following programs: Program 1: Grades 3-5 Program 2: Grades 6-8 Program 3: Grades 9-12 These three levels are linked to the AERO Benchmarks. Next Steps: 1. Document the materials we need for each program and each language 2. Draft all courses in google site: https://spreadsheets.google.com/a/lsnepal.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AjvM SOb6OdDudFhsU01wZVFGQV93Z1RsRF8yRlhqLWc&hl=en Vision and Philosophy statement drafted Next time: Review standards and look at creating some grade level benchmarks

Chip, Brad, Linda

Teacher-led Learning day (Oct. 23). They created an outline and plan of action for the WS and will use next WSI time (Oct. 9) to complete the planning. Another WS theme was proposed: Assessment for Learning. Brian has a WS leaders book on this to guide us and we can strike a working group to plan and present the WS at the next meeting. Vision statement checked and now final. Belief statements were completed and will be reviewed next session. A definition of service learning was included. Referred to standards from NYLC, which are to read before the next meeting and we will look at how they fit in with our vision and belief statements.

ProjectBased Learning

Is there an action plan for introducing culminating projects into grade 8 and 5? (We have senior project and are introducing Grade 10 project) Ongoing and connecting PBL outside of these big culminating ones. Vision statement?

Adams room

Adam, David, Holli, Mark, Jeremiah, Douglas, Emily. Molly, Chris, Bhagawati

The description of the goal of PBL is quite similar to the IB Primary years Program Exhibition in grade 5. Looking at this and the grade 8 project may be helpful. These have been in development for 20 years.
