Ana Kosma, 21100193 OPENING SPEECH CANADA Madam Chairs, distinguished delegates, excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, It is an honour

to address the opening session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Human beings share from necessity. We cooperate to survive. We form communities because that is our natural state. As Cicero observed, We were born to unite with our fellow men, and to join in community with the human race.

Animated by the same spirit of community, the Charter of the United Nations declares that our goals include to live together, to be neighbours, and to unite.

The very first words of the UN Charter make clear that this organization is a body of, by and for human beings. It begins, We the peoples of the United Nations. Not We the countries. Or We the governments. Not We the political leaders. We the peoples.

Almost always, the suffering is felt by the most vulnerable among us.

The countless who are hungry, or lack access to clean water, or are displaced or cannot read and write, or are simply members of minorities need to know that their brothers and sisters in humankind will walk with them through the darkness.

We would like to encourage the willingness to share the knowledge and help some respective nations of the UN in their climate change related challenges.

All respective nations in cooperation have the potential to lift millions of people out of poverty. When success is achieved, it is important to recognize it. The immense effort made in UN Environment Programme must be applauded, and Canada is proud to have an active part in its activities.

Fight against climate change: International community needs this. International community wants this. International community can do this this.

We, like many nations, wish to see a prosperous national economies around the globe.

And how do we as a human family achieve and maintain prosperity?

We let our diversity and distinctiveness bring us closer.

Tolerance helps us understand each other, our different characters, our different national histories.

That is why, although we sometimes have fundamental differences on how steps toward prosperity are made, we need to make a steps towards tolerance and understanding when fur trading.

Peace, prosperity and freedomthese are indeed the conditions that have been sought by human communities from the beginning of recorded time: To live in peace. To live in prosperity. To live in freedom.

Thank you.
