Samantha England Professor Adam Padgett ENGL 1102 March 11th, 2014 Annotated Bibliography Inquiry: Do people actually

realize the effect social media has on their everyday lives? Proposed Thesis: While using social media, people do not realize the different effects that it has on their everyday lives.

Mandiberg, Michael. The Social Media Reader. New York: New York University Press, 2012. Internet resource. In Chapter 6 of Mandibergs book, The Social Media Reader, he begins by questioning what counts as online? Has one ever really thought about it? What does one consider as you being online? How long does one think you spend online? Mandiberg continues to question the everyday things that he does as counting as being online. Something as simple as sleeping by your IPhone; I personally dont count that as being online, even though you still might be connected to the internet and logged onto your social media website, I think since you are sleeping you are exactly online. And just because you are continuously getting notifications still does not mean you are sitting there accepting them right when you arrive. He then goes on to state that even though he consciously and loudly proclaim offline time, hes still technically on through his email because he can still receive this information that was sent to him. In this case I feel like this is true that you can never be truly offline because there is always the ability to retrieve information from anyone at any given time even though you are not required to answer them at the very second. He goes on to conclude and prove my point that even though you are never

truly offline that doesnt mean you have to be or you are always-accessible-toeveryone. With this being said, Mandiberg claims that were passionate about technology because were about people and information, and they go hand in hand. To me this means thats we have such a connection to technology that we cannot separate from it, and when we do we feel like were disconnected from the rest of world for a moment. Golbeck, Jennifer. Analyzing The Social Web. Amsterdam. Elsevier, 2013. Internet Resource. This book by Golbeck, focuses on many different aspects of social media and networking but I specifically chose chapter 6 that was on trust. Golbeck mentions that to have a relationship you must have trust. In a social network, trust impacts the way information spreads, new relationships form, and people behave. This is something I completely agree with and think that it does take trust to be in a relationship. I also believe that trust impacts how we use our social networking by what we post and what information we put out there about ourselves. It makes you think about what others could go on to think about you. She goes on to say that by the 21st century social media was introduced and it continued to grow for the next decade. This all of a sudden new trend pushed people to share tons of personal information and users must trust both the website and other users to treat their personal information with respect. In my opinion other users can abuse your personal information and cause problems within yourself. For me, I provide the minimum about of information about myself as I possibly can. Katz, James E, and Ronald E. Rice. Social Consequences of Internet Use: Access, Involvement, and Interactioin. Cambridge, Mass: MIT Press, 2002. Internet Resource.

In the Civic and Community Involvement portion of this book, Katz and Rice talk about how an individual that is socially plugged in, spend time, money, effort, and psychological commitment to acquire a wide range of benefits, from intrinsic enjoyment to extrinsic financial rewards and influence. This personally could affect an individual by making them loose the sense of face to face communication. They go on to prove my point by saying that when you socially interact, face to face, you are more focused on individual goals and accomplishments but when it is not you lose the sense of expression. Expression is not something you can show through text. Its external and needs to be seen or heard. Dijick, Jose. The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media. Oxford University Press, 2013. Internet Resource. Dijicks book focuses on five different aspects of social media and how it has evolved over the course of the 21st century. I personally chose to look deeper into chapters three and four because those focus on Facebook and Twitter and I found it easier for me to relate. While reading, Dijick points out that social media terms like sharing, liking, friending, and favoriting have all become everyday vocabulary for this generation because social networking sites have become a way first, to get and stay connected and, second, to become (well) connected. But he continues on to say that this doesnt meet the offline interaction it has replaced more dated ways of communication like email and calling each other on the phone for the younger generations. For me, I feel like this is so insane to think how much things have changed from even when I was younger and how I used to email and talk to my friends on the phone for hours to where the generations younger than me probably dont even realize how much technology is involved in their lives and what it would be like without it.

Heinonen, Kristina. Consumer Activity in Social Media: Managerial Behavior. Journal of Consumer Behaviour. 10.6 (2011): 356-364. Print. Heinonen argues in her article that people do a variety of activities online: 1) Consumption of information and entertainment, 2) Participation in social interaction and community development, and 3) production of self-expression and self-actualization. When she says consumption she is inferring to you taking in what others post and then you participate by liking, commenting, sharing, or favoriting what you consumed. You then can produce your own posts to express yourself in a variety of different ways. I believe that everyone can do all three at the same time if not a combination of two of them at the same time. People have learned how to multitask and post and comment about every aspect of their lives for others to see.
