Haley Huggins Professor Kioh Curr 2085 TR 8-9:15 2 February 2014 Article Reviews

The first article I read it talked about the influence of electronic media on the reading ability of school children. Due to technological development, reading habits are changing. In the opinion of the author, technology is slowly taking over everyone's lives. Students are spending more and more time playing games on their technology, no one really just opens up a book for pure enjoyment anymore. specially not this generation of children. Shabi and !dofia "#$$%& noted that active learning from books is better than passive learning, such as watching television and playing video games. 'eading is not taught as a subject and is not included in the curriculum. 'eading has really been left out and people do not even seem to reali(e it, much less care. )owadays, even parents aren't paying attention to their child's reading ability. It is really important to have kids read as much as possible, and to not play so much on these sidetracking technologic devices. Though, some technology devices can be used to increase reading skills. It all depends on how you choose to use it. *orks cited+ Igbokwe, ,., -bidike, )., (eji, . In the second article I read, a teacher in an elementary school was encouraged to use an i4ad to try and help a student, which has 1ttention Deficit 8yperactivity Disorder, who is having difficulty reading. 2omparisons of pre6 and post6assessments showed that the student had gained one year's growth in reading within a si9 weeks time period. The student also gained in confidence and sense of being in control of his learning. School districts from 2alifornia to :irginia has adopted the use of the i4ad in their classrooms to help with a number of things. -ne of those things is the use for te9tbooks. Students can read their subject's te9tbook right from the i4ad, with no books in sight. The use of i4ad's and other electronic devices encourages students to want to read and use the technology. It is much more interesting to children to be able to read on an i4ad or an ebook than just reading from a regular book. veryone knows children are interested in /cooler/, more modern things, so obviously reading from the i4ad is going to make reading more fun, and makes it less harder to

convince young students to read.
