The War Abroad

Day: (Day 4) Objectives: TSW: Draw conclusions out of the textbook to answer questions for bell work. (DOK 3) TSW: Use the PowerPoint slides and lecture to fill out their outlines (DOK 1) TSW: Apply concepts of trench warfare in a trench warfare reenactment. (DOK 4) TSW: Create a letter pretending that they are WWI soldiers. Materials: Pictures via google search (PowerPoint) Whiffle balls Pencil, paper, textbook, laptop, PowerPoint, desks Opening (Set): Good morning everyone, yesterday we finished our discussion on how WWI affected the American home front. Today, we are going to discuss the war abroad, and how the Allies were able to defeat the Central Powers. Following the lecture you all will reenact a trench warfare scene. After we complete the reenactment you all will act as if you are a soldier in the trenches. You will write a letter home to your family discussing the conditions in which you are living. Lets get started.

Survey Questions: Has anyone ever been far from home or overseas for a long period of time? Were you home sick? What was it that you missed? Who can tell me, in their own words, what trench warfare means?

Learning Tasks (Procedures): A. The students will come in, and respond to bell work questions written on the board. a. They may use their text books i. What is trench warfare? ii. What form of weaponry changed warfare more than any other? iii. Why was Russia forced to leave the war? B. After the students finish their bell work, the teacher will go over the correct answers with the class. C. After the students finish their bell work the teacher will enter into the lecture. a. The students should follow along with the PowerPoint presentation in their outlines. b. The teacher will present PowerPoint images in the presentation. D. Following the lecture the students will reenact trench warfare with whiffle balls. a. While presenting the students with a fun and controlled war setting, the students will understand how difficult it was to survive trench warfare. b. The students will also get a good understanding of how tough it was to cross no mans land. E. After the activity, the students will pretend to be WWI soldiers overseas. a. They are to write home to their families describing the conditions in which they are living as well as the weapons they are using and fighting against. b. When finished and/or when the bell rings the students will turn in their letters for a grade. Closure: Alright, this block is almost over so lets review what we went over today. We discussed what the war in Europe looked like. We also physically reenacted trench warfare. We discussed how the Allies were able to defeat Germany and the Central Powers. You all should have a good idea of what soldiers, at that time, went through after writing your letters home as well. Tomorrow we will analyze some primary sources pertaining to the end of WWI. Intervention: Give a copy of the PowerPoint slides to a struggling learner(s)
