I would first like to thank Dr. Williams for allowing us the opportunity to work alongside an established coach such as Coach Steve Joyner Jr. and the Womens Basketball program and Coach Joyner Jr. for bring me into his family of coaches and not only teaching me the responsibilities and duties of a coach but trusting in me the title of Assistant Coach. This title is a huge responsibility and I am going to explain to you my duties and responsibilities that Coach Joyner Jr. has established for me as an Assistant Coach of a premier basketball program. As an Assistant Coach for Johnson C. Smith Universities Womens Basketball program I perform responsible program s building including, planning, coaching, and recruiting. I am assisting in managing and directing womens basketball program. My work is performed under general supervision and performance evaluation is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. My performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures even though I am a student coach. I have a requirement of achieving 60 hours of participation in my coaching experience. I report directly to the universities Director, Intercollegiate Athletics, Head Basketball Coach and the two other Assistant Coaches. This is known as the universities organizational relationships. My direct supervision responsibilities include checking curfew and assisting with keeping up with our teams timeouts and all fouls committed during the game. My primary duties as an assistant coach for Johnson C. Smith University Womens Basketball include, but are not limited to the following, assists the head coach in managing and directing the basketball program, assists the head basketball coach with all aspects of the team including training, competing and scheduling. Also organizes and maintains accurate inventory of basketball equipment and uniforms. Help in coordination of travel arrangements, distribute the scouting and tape exchange and coordinates facility needs of visiting teams. It is the responsibility of the assistant coaches to

commit to and is responsible for adhering to all rules and regulations set forth for the team, the University, the CIAA Conference and the NCAA with the utmost integrity. As the season continues I hope my duties will pick up and I will be assigned administrative duties so I can assist recruiting including calling prospective student-athletes, evaluating high school and junior college players, and maintaining an accurate records and database on the NCAAs Compliance Assistant program. Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletics department, attends department meetings and activities, and always represents the University positively when interacting with the community, alumni, high school and club coaches, media and general public. Also attends seminars, conferences and other professional development opportunities. Coordinates facility needs of visiting teams, implements Athletics strategic plan as part of the Division of Student Lifes strategic plan and perform other duties as requested by my head coach, AD and assistant coaches. During this process of performing my duties and responsibilities that have been assigned to me by the coaching staff I have been being evaluated by the coaching staff. This evaluations is on my interaction with the players and staff and my ability to perform the duties that has been assigned to me. They allow me the opportunity to receive feedback and make adjustments as needed. I believe I am asset to our team and its success and the coaching staff me present for all team events and practices because of my ability to scout opponents and break down game tapes. I am working on the ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the university, the CIAA Conference and the NCAA. Based on my job experiences and real world encounters I have a proven record in following directives and being responsible for tasks which have been assigned. I have the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment as needed, and

the ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. I feel that my knowledge of management methods from my experience with the NBA and ability to provide administrative guidance within area and provide direct training and supervision as needed is a great asset to the Womens Basketball program. I also have the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public. In my opinion my greatest contribution to the team and the university is my ability to communicate effectively. Weather it is orally, by phone, in person, and in writing and with my CPR certification I am able to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner. This allows me to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. Being an assistant coach has a high physical demand. The physical demands I am going to describe here are representative of those that must be met by an assistant to successfully perform the essential functions of my job. While performing the duties of this job, I am occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear and occasionally lift, carry, or drag approximately 50 pounds. As for my work environment so far I am responsible for performing my duties in an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. My work is performed indoors and or outdoors in conditions including loud and constant noise. Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks. Plus I am required to travel with the team to all away games. Coach Joyner Jr. and Coach Worthy have given me the responsibility in assisting in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work safely in

accordance with departmental safety procedures. Such as checking for objects and wet spots on the court and managing the usage of the shooting machine within individual workouts to keep the players safe and free of non- playing injuries. These duties do not constitute an employment agreement between the university and me and is subject to change by the university as the needs of the university and requirements of the job change. Maintains Equipment is an assistant coaches responsibility to maintains equipment to make sure it's available and in good working condition. That might mean inflating balls, putting up nets, filling water bottles and cleaning the locker room. We have equipment managers, but being a small school we assist in the performance of those duties. An assistant coach often communicates with other schools to make sure equipment is available for away games and packs supplies needed for the trip. Coach Worthy orders replacement equipment or takes damaged equipment to be repaired. I help implement practices; practices are a vital part of team sports, so as an assistant coach. I help facilitate practice time. Implementing drills and game plans into practices, according to the head coach's instruction and also offers input for game strategies and gives advice for specific plays or game tactics. An assistant coach helps players learn their playbooks and keeps track of players' punctuality and participation in practices. Support the Coach, is one of the assistant coach's most important roles, even though it's not always the most visible part of the job, is supporting the head coach. The assistant coach discusses the game plan with the head coach, supports the coach in front of students and parents, follows team guidelines, keeps the coach updated on player injuries, scouts teams and players and helps with transportation when necessary. An assistant coach has a full plate of responsibilities, but one of his top priorities is making sure the head coach looks good.

As a student coach I have the luxury to be learning under the tutelage of Coach Steve Joyner Jr., Head Coach, Coach Worthy and Coach Robinson, who are proven winners and a student of the game of basketball either as a player or a coach. Coach Joyner Jr. has wonderful key points in his staffs success. He always tells his players at every practice to settle down and just play basketball, never think too much, just react to what the situation gives you. The thinking comes in your preparation. If you prepare and study hard the game is easy. Remember for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction Isaac Newton. These types of pep talks are essential to a teams mental stability. Being a Head Coach is a wonderful job I am sure but the hardest part is cutting a player who is trying out for the team. At Johnson C. Smith University every student has the opportunity to try out for any sport they want to. Having this desire as a student comes with a lot of responsibility and the main factor in your ability to make any team is conditioning. Conditioning is the primary thing coaches look at when evaluating a player. This is shown by the Womens Basketball letter that is sent out to those who have tried out but did not make it. It states Thank you for your interest in Johnson C. Smiths Womens Basketball. However at this time we cannot bring you aboard. Keep working hard and understand the most important thing is to be in shape. Thank you again, Johnson C. Smith Womens Basketball This letter is short, simple and straight to the point. Even if you felt like you were in shape and you deserved to make the team this letter makes you think about what you could have done harder and question how good of shape you were really in. These letters are a vital part in

keeping good standards with the students who have tied out and the students who will be trying out in the future. Having a great relationship with the students is an important part in the programs success. In conclusion throughout my experience so far with being an assistant basketball coach here at Johnson C. Smith University has been a wonderful one. I am grateful the coaching staff and Head Coach Steven Joyner for giving me the opportunity to help out and assist in everyday coaching assignments and welcoming me into the Johnson C. Smith Womens Basketball family and that is exactly what they are. Keeping great people around you and being able to count on them day in and day out is the only way to be successful. Coach Joyner Jr. has had this family atmosphere his whole career and got this falsify from his father and longtime Coach and Athletic Director Steve Joyner Sr. and now CIAA Hall of Famer. I hope based on this opportunity that it will allow me the opportunity after graduation to become a full-time member of the universities staff and drop the title of student coach and become an Assistant Coach of either the mens or womens basketball programs. This is an achievable by the relationship I have built with coaching staff and the university.
