TWS 9 A.

Classroom Management Creating a safe, both physically and emotionally, positive learning environment is the key to building a classroom community in which students feel valued. Beginning each day with a morning meeting is a great way for students to build personal relationships with one another as well as a time for students to build a personal relationship with their teacher. Morning meetings are a time for greetings, group activities, sharing, and new/announcements. During the greeting portion of morning meetings, students are able to practice their social skills by greeting their classmates. The greeting portion consists of a quick Good Morning and some type of handshake. During the group activity, students participate in a brief activity that encourages students to practice social or academic skills. Examples of group activities would be educational games, songs, dances, or any type of team building activity. During the sharing process, students are able to share any information about important events occurring in their lives. During the sharing portion, listeners are allowed to offer advice, sympathies, or ask questions relating to the event shared. Lastly, during news/announcements the teacher shares the main focuses for the day. Providing news/announcements gives the students a heads up for what to expect. By incorporating morning meetings on a daily basis, students are promoted to develop a friendly and appreciative relationship with their classmates and teacher. By developing these types of relationship, the classroom community is physically and emotionally safe. Behavioral Expectations: 1. Respect everyone including yourself 2. Always make good choices 3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself 4. Listen and follow directions 5. Always do your best Hierarchy of Consequences: 1.Warning 2. In-class time out 3. Letter to parents 4. Office referral Reinforcements: Intrinsic: 1. Verbal recognition 2. Offering extra time at the computer 3. Allowing the child to run errands

Extrinsic: 1. Homework Pass 2. Visit to the Student Reward Box 3. A positive note home to parents B. Non-instructional Routines and Procedures: Each morning, I will greet students at the door as they enter the classroom. As students enter, they will make their breakfast and lunch choice on the clipboard located on the desk directly beside the door. Once students have made their breakfast and lunch choice, they are to unpack everything needed for the day and place it inside of their desk. Once students have hung their book bags on the wall, they are to complete their morning work located on the whiteboard in their morning work notebooks. Students who arrive early and finish their morning work before the time instruction begins have the opportunity to independently read or complete any unfinished classwork. While students are completing their morning duties, I will use the breakfast/lunch choice sheet to take attendance. I will call out the students names that have not made a choice to ensure that all students who are present are counted present. After submitting the attendance, students will know to come to the rug for morning meeting. During morning meeting, students will greet one another, engage in a team building activity, share any important news, and listen as the teacher provides any news or announcements. At the beginning of the year each student will apply for a classroom job and receive a classroom job. Students will apply for the following jobs: Sanitation Commissioner (takes care of trash cans, recycling bin, washing the board, and cleans up appropriate messes in the classroom), Teacher Assistant, (runs daily errands and helps with any chores as they come up), Historian (keeps record of major activities of the week and writes one positive thing about each classmate at the end of the week. The positive comments will be apart of the news/announcements at the following morning meeting.), Line Leader (leads class to restroom, lunch, related arts classes, and dismissal), Paper Leader (hands out papers), Pencil Leader (makes sure pencils are sharpened at the end of each day and empties pencil sharpener), Lunch Leader (makes sure tables and chairs at lunch are left how they were found), Botanist (waters plants), Librarian (maintains classroom library), Materials Manager (checks the materials at centers and keeps an inventory), Mayor (starts the pledge every morning), Tax Collector (takes up money, homework, and anything else students turn in to the teacher), Clerk of Court (collects tests, quizzes, or anything turned in for a grade from the appropriate baskets, paper clips them together, and places them on the teachers desk). During transitions between subjects, students will know which textbook and notebook to have on their desk as a part of our established classroom

management. The daily schedule will be posted in front of the room in case students forget which subject comes next. Emergency procedures will be discussed during the first week of school. Students will understand the importance of drills and understand exactly what to do in case of an emergency drill. During the real event of an emergency drill, I will calmly evacuate all students, and make sure to have my emergency drill kit (list of students present, first aid kit, and the packet of school wide emergency drill plans).
