Trevor Tanas Professor Padgett ENGL 1102 3/10/14 Annotated Bibliography Inquiry: What effects, both negative and

positive alike, does Social Media have on our society? Thesis: Social Media is dangerous yet profitable in many ways to both adults and our children. Floros, G. D. "742 Internet Addiction and Related Addictive Behaviors in a Sample of Medical School Students." Web. 10 Mar. 2014. Internet addiction is a multi-faceted construct which is currently under review for inclusion in the forthcoming fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. The internet along with social media has been found to be highly addictive in this sample group. In fact, Floros goes on to say that in his conclusions Our results are demonstrating the need for a broader reach out to the target populations since a large number of students may be hesitant to seek help for their online addictions or simply prefer to ignore them. I believe that the findings are a bit indecorous and overly dramatic. We live in a different day and age where using the internet including social media has become a part of everyday life. How can something that is considered a part of everyday life to also be considered addictive. Those are two conflicting ideas. Maybe I am wrong and we all are addicted, but if so maybe its not all that bad.

Qualman, Erik. "Socialnomics : How Social Media Transforms the Way We Live and Do Business." (Book, 2009) Hoboken, Web. 10 Mar. 2014. Social media has turned the way we date, communicate, and especially do business upside down. Simply put, it is a new way of doing things and almost everyone is in on it. As a result, we no longer have a choice on whether we do social media; the question is how well we do it says Qualman. He takes social media and looks at it from a business point of view. It is easy, quick, and can help you make a lot of money. He uses words like Social word of mouth. Social word of mouth? I didnt think there was such a thing until I thought about it and realized that its relatively new. A truly revolutionary way of branding and advertising has opened up and we need to take advantage. Business opportunity is one of the only clear positives to social media and we need to understand the possibilities. Zappavigna, Michele. "The Discourse of Twitter and Social Media." (Book, 2012) Michele Zappavigna, Web. 10 Mar. 2014. Social Medias like Twitter and Facebook have changed the way we communicate. Terms like lol and hmu have become popular shortened terms or social media slang. Many more of these slangs exist on the internet and via text messaging as well. In Zappavignas book, she introduces these terms to us and trys to help us understand why. She says Social media such as microblogging services and social networking sites are changing the way people interact online and search for information and opinions. She argues that we are moving into a different time of Searchable Talk and ways of improving finding others messages via hashtags. This is just silly to me. If anything we are moving backwards with improper English and laziness in terms of Social Media slang. I understand that these slangs are not used on official documents and that it is an easier and quicker way of communicating, but if we keep moving in this direction then what is next? Hopefully we will not be allowing our

children to use any of these slangs in future educational documents. While some may see these shortened terms as positive I believe them to be one of the negatives of social media and a very slippery slope. Girard, John P., and JoAnn L. Girard. "Social Knowledge : Using Social Media to Know What You Know." (Book, 2011). Web. 10 Mar. 2014. Executives have struggled to develop effective ways of sharing what their organizations know says the Girards. I think there are a range of other outlets besides social media where executives can share what they know. There is nothing wrong with email. We have had telephones now for a while. However, I understand where the authors are coming from. The thing that makes social media so powerful is the mass amounts of people you can share an idea within a few seconds. This is what makes Twitter popular among so many different celebrities because it makes it possible to communicate with all their fans. Organizational leaders are now seeking ways to share knowledge with both internal and external stakeholders driven by concerns such as downsizing, the impending retirement of baby boomers, terrorism, and a host of other organizational challenges. The Girards go on to say that social media is more organized, quicker, and more effective for these executives. This can be very profitable for big companies and I can see why it is so appealing. Wang, Q., Chen, W., and Liang, Y. (2011). The Effects of Social Media on College Students. Johnson & Wales University, Providence, RI. Thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate says Wang. I would agree completely and I would also add that it is also enjoyable to use for most users. Wang also sees the negative side to social media and says Schill states that the social media sites encourage negative behaviors for teen students such as procrastination (catching up with

friends), and they are more likely to drink and use drugs. Once again I would completely agree. So we have this new technological wave of communication in the form of social media that has both positives and negatives. The only thing we are left wondering is if the positives outweigh the negatives. I believe they do, but there are still many dangers that await for our youth. We can avoid this by setting limits for ourselves and by supervising our children on social media. Obviously there will always be negatives about social media but we can seriously reduce them with a little work to make social media a better place for all of us.
