Dawn Johnson Gabriel Observation Date: 3/20/14 Mathematics

Core Standard 1: Counting and Quantity Rate: 1/6 Demonstrates awareness of the presence of objects Gabriel walked over to the family mobile and looked up at it. I turned the mobile so it spun and moved. He followed the mobile with his eyes and body as he spun with it. While Gabriel was on top of the climber, I handed him a block. He smiled as he took the block from my hands.

Core Standard 2: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Rate: 1/6 Manipulates objects for a purpose Gabriel played with a red block from the stackable blocks in the classroom. With the block in hand, he explored it with his mouth. He licked the block and then placed the corner of the block in his mouth. Learning Goal: For Gabriel to be able to play with the blocks with a purpose in mind.

Core Standard 3: Measurement and Data (Time) Rate: 0/6 No Evidence Gabriel was placed at 0 because he only had two of the characteristics for level 1. Five minutes before the 2 oclock snack I told Gabriel it was time to wash his hands for snack. He followed me over to the sink and washed his hands with my help. We then went over to the snack table and ate. Learning Goal: For Gabriel to be anticipate snack time and the need to wash his hands by himself.

Core Standard 4: Measurement and Data (Location) Rate: 1/6 - Demonstrates an awareness of location of objects Gabriel played with the two blocks by the dramatic play kitchen. I then took one block away and placed it inside the play fridge. I asked him where the block went. He then looked at me, went to the play fridge, opened the door and then picked up the block.

Core Standard 5: Measurement and Data (Length, Capacity, Weight, Temperature)

Rate: 0/6 - No evidence


Gabriel was placed at 0 because he only had one characteristic for level 1. During afternoon snack Gabriel ate cheese and crackers. He stopped eating these and I asked if he was finished. Gabriel just looked at me. So, I took his bowl away and placed it on the table so I would be able to help him out of his chair. He then put his fingers together signing more and then pointed at me. I then gave Gabriel his bowl and he finished his snack. Learning Goal: For Gabriel to respond to all done or finished.

Core Standard 6: Geometry (Sorting and Classifying Objects) Rate: 0/6 - No evidence Gabriel played with two stackable blocks. The red one is bigger than the yellow one. He tried to place the red block into the yellow block and was not able to get the red block to fit in the yellow one. He tried this twice and then moved on to a different activity. Learning Goal: For Gabriel to be able to place smaller objects into larger objects.
