Overview
Collecting and Displaying Data
O Build on second grade concepts about data, graphing,

and line plots

O End of the module, students are working with O scaled picture graphs, O bar graphs, and O line plots to problem solve using both categorical and

What qualifies something as data?

How can data be categorized ? How can data be organized?

When can a bar graph be used to organize data?

What kind of data does a line plot organize? How can data be interpreted or understood using graphs

How can graphs and data be used to problem solve?

Enduring Understandings
Large sets of data can be organized using graphs. Data can be interpreted using graphs. Multiplication can assist in organizing data in graphs

Topic A: Generate and Analyze Categorical Data

O Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar

graph to represent a data set with several categories.

O Solve one- and two-step how many more

and how many less problems using information

O present in scaled bar graphs.

O For example, draw a bar graph in which each

square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.

Topic B: Generate and Analyze Measurement Data

O Generate measurement data by measuring lengths

using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch.

O Show the data by making a line plot, where the

horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
