CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1b Build on others talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1c Ask for clarification and further explanation as needed about the topics and texts under discussion.
Objective 1. Students will be able to summarize and explain the article Falling Stars by participating in a small group interactive read aloud. 2. Students will be able to complete a story time worksheet at 75% accuracy to demonstrate their understanding of the main concepts of the article Falling Stars.
Procedure o Introduce the cover of the time magazine: Falling Stars article.

Showing the students the cover page, ask for a student to read aloud the headlines. What will this article be about?

One student will begin reading the article aloud to the small group. Going around the circle, each student will read some of the article and call on another student to pick up where they have left off. After paragraph two ask: Describe wasting syndrome show students the top picture of the healthy sea star compared to the bottom picture of the sea star with wasting syndrome.

Have one student read the definition of disintegrate (in the power word box). Continue with the article reading.

* Guided Practice:
What is wasting syndrome? In your own words what does disintegrate mean? Who is Pete Raimondi? Do scientists know what is causing the disease? Think box: What is different about wasting syndrome this time?
* Independent Practice:
Story Time Worksheet1. Picture This: Draw a picture of a healthy sea star. 2. Power Up: Use the word disintegrate in a sentence. 3. Good Question: What is one question you would ask Pete Raimondi? 4. Whats the Story: Explain what Falling Stars is about.

Students may work independently or may work with their peers. I will be walking around to assist the students who may need help. After completion of the worksheet students may continue to read the rest of the magazine independently. Students are encouraged to try the Show what you know quiz on the back of the magazine.
Assessments Story Time Worksheet: students complete worksheet at a 75% accuracy to demonstrate the understanding of the article Falling Stars. Differentiation Struggling Learners: I will have these students read the article silently to themselves and after I will read the article aloud to them as they follow along. I will also read the worksheet out loud to them, guide them to correct/appropriate responses. Advanced Learners: I will have these students read the article aloud going around the circle. These students will also complete the worksheet independently. I will encourage the students to try the Show what you know quiz on the back of the magazine if there are early finishers.
