Assessment Description: 1. The applicant introduced himself well in good Japanese. 2. The applicant could understand simple/basic questions in Japanese. The assessor need not repeat her questions since the applicants listening ability was very good. The interview went smoothly. 3. The applicant passed the JLPT Exam Level 3 in 1997. He claimed that after his stint at a Japanese company in Yokohama, he continued studying Nihongo by himself. The Assessor could confirm that it is, indeed, his appropriate level. 4. The Assessor noticed that the applicant used too much language fillers s uch as ano, mama and eeto which are basically Japanese, but could give a bad impression to the listener. There were very little grammatical errors noticed as the conversation progressed. 5. Applicant has some knowledge about the Japanese culture since he was able to work in Yokohama and has many Japanese friends. He said that he used Nihongo at work, mostly. Applicant was also able to answer fairly the work related questions thrown his way, e.g. what he would advise if a client calls to ask for help regarding his computer, no power, no internet connection, et.al. 6. Ability to understand KEIGO (Honorific language) was fair since he was able to understand the questions phrased in Keigo. However, when asked to respond using Keigo, the applicant was lost. He answered in an informal way which is a no-no in the honorific mode of the language. The Assessor called his attention and asked him if he has real knowledge of Keigo. He said he can understand but cannot yet apply it. He needs essential training in this area as he has only self studied recently. 7. When asked how he would personally rate his Nihongo proficiency in a scale of 1-10, he answered he is a 5. This assessment only serves to provide an overview of how the applicant can communicate in Basic Nihongo and Keigo.
