Student: John Ryan Course: EDU 521 Grade: 10 Topic: Law of Sines/Cosines

Professor Rickey Mornoey Date: Day 2 Content Area: Trig

Instructional Objectives After a lesson on the Law of Sines and Cosines, students will be able to determine the missing sides and angles of a triangle, given sufficient information, and be able to apply that knowledge if given similar triangles with 85% accuracy. Common Core Standards CCSS.G.SRT.9 - Derive the formula A = 1/2 ab sin(C) for the area of a triangle by drawing an auxiliary line from a vertex perpendicular to the opposite side. Indicator: This will be evident during class discussion and during group work.

CCSS.G.SRT.10 - Prove the Laws of Sines and Cosines and use them to solve problems. Indicator: This will be evident during class discussion and during group work. Motivation Students will be shown a picture of a basic "Shadow Problem", where an object casts a shadow. Although unable to solve it now, they will be given a chance to go back to the problem later and answer it after learning about the Law of Sines Materials

PowerPoint presentation Textbook Worksheet Pen/Pencil Calculators Strategies

Direct Instruction: This will be evident when I directly teach the students about the Law of Sines and how to apply it in the example questions. Individual Work: This will be evident when the students work independently on example questions where they can apply to Law of Sines. Group Discussion: This will be evident at the end of the class, when we review what we have learned and discuss our findings. Adaptations

For the student with visual impairment, they will be provided worksheets with larger font. They will also receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation in advance. For the student with a hearing impairment, they will be seated at the front of the classroom. Differentiation of Instruction Tier I: Students will be able to understand the Law of Sines/Cosine and apply it if given the question in written form (if a = 10, a = 50, and b = 7, find b) but is unable to see it given a picture of a triangle. Tier II: Students will be able to understand the Law of Sines/Cosines and apply it if given the question in written form of picture form. Once in a while they make mistakes but later understand what they did wrong. Tier III: Students will be able to understand the Law of Sines/Cosines and apply it if given the question in written form of picture form. They can solve these problems with relative ease. Developmental Procedures 1. Do Now: Students will walk into class with a 'Do Now' shown on the board. Students should only be able to answer half of the question. 2. Class Discussion: The teacher will then go over the first half of the question with the students which is just a review of the previous lesson. ("How do we solve the next part of the question?") 3. Direct Instruction: The teacher will now introduce the Law of Sines and its formula. The teacher will then apply this formula to the question, step-bystep, showing all work.("Can this apply to all triangles?") 4. The teacher will then show some examples where after the given information no triangle can be formed and explain why. 5. Class Discussion: The teacher will put a problem on the board that needs Law of Cosines to solve.(Can we use Law of Sines for this problem? Explain why?) 6. Direct Instruction: The teacher will now introduce the Law of Cosines and its formula. The teacher will then apply this formula to the question, stepby-step, showing all work.(Does this formula remind of of any other? "Can this apply to all triangles?" Can this be applied to right triangles too?) 7. Activity Group work: The teacher will group students into pairs, then show some examples where after the given information 2 triangles can be formed and explain why. Assessment Students will be assessed by their participation in class and responding to questions during the lesson. Students will explain their answers (step by step if necessary).

When they do individual work, students will show the teacher how they came to their respective answers. Independent Practice Following the lesson, students will be given a homework assignment either from the textbook or a worksheet. Follow-up Direct Teacher Intervention: For those students whom I believe did not understand the lesson will be asked to meet after school or during a common free period to re-teach the core elements of the lesson and reassess their progress. Academic Enrichment: Students will construct their own triangle, giving the proper information and letting another student solve that problem.
