LESSON DESIGN & DELIVERY

LESSON PLAN P
Your Name: Rachel Lundstrom Lesson Title: Mesopotamia Vocabulary Cooperating Teacher: Suzanne Walters____________________ College Supervisor: Kim Arsenault Date: 2/6/14___________________ School: Holland Heights______ Length: 30 minutes

GLCE: 6 W2.1.4 Use evidence to identify defining characteristics of early civilizations and early pastoral nomads (government, language, religion, social structure, technology, and division of labor). R.WS.02.11 in context, determine the meaning of words and phrases including objects, actions, concepts, content vocabulary, and literary terms, using strategies and resources including context clues, mental pictures, and questioning. OBJECTIVE: TLWBAT: identify Mesopotamian vocabulary (chapter 6) and define terms in her own words, by creating a concept map of the term. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS: (What you will state to students prior to teaching.)
During todays class, we are going to spend some time reviewing the vocabulary from Mr. Thomas class. Working together, it is going to be important to listen to everyones ideas, and work as a team to create our own definitions. Although we will not be raising our hands because this is such a small group, we still need to respect everyones thoughts and comments.

OUTLINE OF LESSON: (As appropriate, use the Direct Instruction format & label the parts.)
Anticipatory Set When looking at this wordle, Im sure you recognize some of the terms. Are there any you are familiar with? Objective Today, we are going to look closer at our Social Studies vocabulary in order to more write our own definitions of the terms. Rationale This deeper look will be helpful in Mr. Thomas class, so that you can better understand the terms when you are completing the readings and listening in class. Input First, lets go through each of the terms for chapter 6. Do you recognize any of them from the classes you have already had? Lets go through and read each definition aloud together. These definitions from our textbook are great, but they are usually difficult to remember. Lets create our own definitions to help us remember the terms. -vocabulary worksheet -laptop or iPad with PowerPoint slideshow

Modeling On the top of your vocabulary worksheet, write the first term, empire, and chapter 6. We will come back to the my understanding piece later. Under textbook definition, we will use the definition from my PowerPoint and our textbook. Now, it is our job to draw a picture, and create our own definition. What words in this definition are confusing? How can we rewrite this definition to make more sense? Check for Understanding So, in order to make the definition make more sense, drawing a picture and editing the textbook definition will help us to remember the term. Under my understanding, circle 1 if you feel like you have mastered this term, 4 if you still are very confused, and 2 or 3 if you are somewhere in between. Guided Practice Lets work together to rewrite the definitions for capital, tribute, and code of laws. Remember to use language that makes sense to you, but still has the correct meaning. Independent Practice Now, lets each create our own definition. Alexa, you can work on economy; and Hannah, you can work on siege. Afterwards, we will share and compare. Closure Nice work today ladies! These definitions will make Social Studies readings and assignments much easier to complete in Mr. Thomas class.

EVALUATION OF OBJECTIVE: (What you will do to see if the students mastered the objective.) To check for evaluation, we will play a definition game, where one member of the group will provide bits of a definition, and it will be up to the other two to guess what term it is. The job of defining the term will rotate between the two students and me. REFLECTIONS ON TEACHING AND MANAGEMENT CLASSROOM AND BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT: 1. How did you share your expectations with your students? 2. Did you have any behavioral situations which you needed to address during the lesson? Explain. 3. What considerations (regarding behavior) did you make when preparing for this lesson?

LESSON EVALUATION & RECOMMENDATIONS:

1, Did the students achieve your daily objective for this lesson? How do you know? 2. If you were to teach a follow up lesson tomorrow, what would you focus on? Why?
