THE STORIES OF LORD KATHIKEYA IV

Devasenapathy:
From innocent youth to commander of the Armed Forces of the Gods As the young lord look command of the Army of the Gods. Lord Indira the king of the gods resented this. The Divine Protector, Lord Vishnu chided him for the jealously and reminded him that a victory for Lord Muruga was a victory for all of them. Lord Muruga was created to destroy the enemies of the Devas. He was a friend. In order to make up for his petty emotions, the god of Rain and Thunder, Lord Indira bestowed upon the young Lord Subramanya his bellowed daughter Devasenas hand in marriage. Thus it was Lord Muruga became the husband (pathy) of Devasena as well as becoming the Senapathy (Captain/Commander) of the Army of the Gods.

Devasena was Lord Murugas first wife. She is also called Devayanai as she takes the form of the Divine White Elephant that led the Devas to war. Thus it is in the older temples Lord Murugas totem animal (vahan vehicle) is the elephant not the peacock which happened only after the war. Lord Muruga has another wife who has a Sri Lankan connection as well as being believed to be the divine child of Lord Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi. But that is a story for another time. Long after the winning of the war against the demons.
