Science students learned annotation symbols and practiced annotation of scientific articles to improve their comprehension and understanding.

They also practiced writing claims based on their reading of multiple non-fiction articles along with providing appropriate evidence and reasoning to support their claims. Student samples have been included at the various grade levels which demonstrate the graduation in expectations and performance from grade 6 to 8. For example, eighth grade students were learning to cite the sources of the evidence they selected.

The science department has a unique perspective on CER writing because making claims supported by appropriate evidence and reasoning is at the heart of the scientific discipline.
