Logan Dukehart 3/12/2014 ENME 332 Lab 1 Report Introduction With the conduction measurement apparatus we sampled different

temperatures at different locations along the brass sections. The electrical heat generated at the two ends of the system are cancelled out by the water circulation subsystem, T4 and T5. This experiment is being conducted to visually understand the process of radiation and thermal conductivity of an unknown section. We are to determine the thermal conductivity through the equation:

As the beam is a cross sectional area that heat will be traveling through this accounts for the area. As the thermal conductivity is known for brass, we can view the rate at which the temperature changes over the distance between the three locations and to the surface of the unknown section. With a known area, finding when the temperatures of both T3 and T6 are at equilibrium would show you the change in temperature over the overall height of the sample. The heat transfer rate will also be known of the surfaces of the two brass section. With the equation you solve for k and have the thermal conductivity of the sample which can be found on page 983 from the text book.
