AE FOUNDRY PAVILION (V 2.

0)
Chris Barlow Project Ideation: This pavilion is meant to reflect the history of its
surroundings, the original site of the Foundry building. In order to achieve this, I analyzed several shapes of instruments and tools used for metalworking. Aside from utilizing this site research, I also wanted this pavilion to be a space that visitors could make their own. I wanted to include elements that an occupant could move around and customize according to their needs. Lastly, I wanted this to be a comfortable space.

Elevation Plan

Project Description: From the site research, three forms were chosen: the furnace, the crucible, and molten metal. The furnace was used as the central
structure. From the furnace, three pathways extend toward three large round cylinders. These are the crucibles. These crucibles are connected by glass pathways tinted a glowing red. Students pass through these structures and descend down a short flight of stairs .These stairs radiate outward like layers of molten metal being poured into pre-cast forms. In order to make the space customizable, I added moveable walls to the west walls around the entrance. This will help induce air flow through the space (as needed), utilizing the prevailing wind patterns of State College, which flow west to east. I decided that a fire pit would be a perfect centerpiece for the furnace as both an appropriate designation of its social purposes and a direct link to its name. Not only this but it would also help to make the space comfortable at night and during the winter.

Prevailing Wind Patterns: Winds typically flow from west to east in State College. All walls on the West side of this pavilion can either be closed off or opened up to restrict or allow air flow depending on occupants needs
