New 1 Johnny New Professor Baird ENG 1010 Section 089 03/25/2013 Annotated Bibliography The question that

t I am asking in my research paper is what disease needs to be funded more Alzheimers or cancer in terms of the effect on the family and the patient? What brought me to this project is I saw a news article on this subject and it interested me greatly because I have had a family member die of cancer and a family member diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and both greatly affected me but cancer is receiving much more funding than Alzheimers. I wanted to look into why that is happening. My research will help make me aware because it will give me greater insight to why things are happening the way they are, and also it will help me make the decision for myself if I think the amount of finding given to the respective diseases needs to change. 1. Goldschmidt, Debra, dir. Alzheimer's far more likely than breast cancer in women over 60. CNN, 2014. Film. 27 Mar 2014. In the CNN report about how Alzheimers disease is more likely in women over sixty than breast cancer is they talk to Marilyn White, a survivor of breast cancer, and someone who is diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. White talks about how aware she was of breast cancer she was because of how much publicity the cancer has gained White also says that Alzheimers was not on her radar for something to fear. As soon as Marilyn White discovered a lump in her breast she was able to get rid of it and is now a five year survivor of cancer, but when white started to lose her memory she simply credited it to

New 2 old age. White states, It would have helped me if I knew stage by stage what was happening, I think I would have caught it sooner. She firmly believed that with more awareness of the disease she could have caught it sooner and put on medication sooner, although there is no cure for Alzheimers there is medicine to delay its affect. White is one person of many that wants to raise awareness for Alzheimers disease. I thought CNN did a very good job on addressing a touchy subject. They never once discredited Breast Cancer and still acknowledged it was a deadly disease. One segment of the video went to logos and they stated some of the facts about Alzheimers disease and the likelihood that women over sixty would get it. CNN emotional appeal was by far their best use of rhetoric throughout the show they used Marylyn White to get emotional appeal from the audience they were able to give people a firsthand experience of what it was like for white to have the disease of Alzheimers essentially creep up on her. CNN itself is for the most part a credible source I did not pick up much bias in the video. Overall I thought the video was a good source in terms of its use of Rhetoric. This video was able to directly influence my thinking on the subject, I saw how high the awareness for breast cancer is and how low the awareness for Alzheimers disease is. They made very good points in the video of how our country is so aware of breast cancer and people are able to catch it know earlier because of the awareness by the walks the ribbons and even the White House that glows pink sometimes, and how this has increased the rate of people who survive, but there is nearly no awareness for Alzheimers disease. This source gives a good first hand experience of Alzheimers disease and the awareness it has versus the far greater amount of awareness breast cancer gets. No other source that I have has the exact incite to what I am studying better than this one does. This directly relates with what I am talking about in that I am

New 3 will be writing about the funding and awareness that each disease has and the effects of each disease.

2. Park, Alice. "Alzheimer's Unlocked." Time International (South Pacific Edition) 176.17 (2010): 30-35. Business Source Premier. Web. 27 Mar. 2014. In Alice parks article called Alzheimers Unlocked parks gives us good incite to the disease and helps us to easily understand some of the progress research has made in finding help for Alzheimers disease and also the short comings it has had. Alice parks goes into funding in the first part of her article she talks not only about how little amounts of money are being put into the disease in comparison with other diseases but how little researchers believe the disease is being cures 81% of researchers believe that progress is being made in curing Heart disease 74% said cancer was the same but only 48% or researchers polled believed progress was being made in Alzheimers disease. Parks then starts to explain that the best ways to help this disease find a cure is earlier and accurate recognition of the disease, along with broadening the scope from which we view this disease. In the final part of her Article she explains amyloid protein plaque and how build of this plaque may be one of the causes of the disease, although the plaque is not the only contributor it is believed to be one of them. Alice Park had a very good use of Rhetoric in her paper. Her Ethos was her best used form of rhetoric not only is this a peer reviewed article but her sources in the paper are all credible, most of all of her sources at professors at universities. Parks also does a great job in keeping the subject matter simple she does not try to establish her ethos using big scary words but simple explains her points well. Her appeal to fact and knowledge also works well in thiarticle you can tell she knows what she is talking about and uses good sources to back up her

New 4 claims. Parks emotional appeal was the weak point in her paper not once did I spot an appeal to emotion but at the same time I do not think this affected her paper too greatly. Overall her use of Rhetoric was very good. This article affected my thinking greatly it gave me knowledge to put behind what I knew about Alzheimers she was able to explain why the disease needed more funding and also give background into what has been done so far in the progress of the disease. The article was different than any other article I read is it gives me scientific research into Alzheimers and why the disease needs more funding and where that funding would go. This was a good article to relate back to my final paper I will be able to give my reader incite to what is happening in the field with Alzheimers and also why it needs more funding. All the facts she uses I will able to utilize in my paper because they deal exactly with what I plan to talk about

3. "Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center." The Family's Response: Feinberg School of Medicine: Northwestern University. N.p., 26 Mar. 2012. Web. 30 Mar. 2014. The Article titled The Familys Response goes into how families react to having a loved one with Alzheimers. The article was very easy to read and gave good incite to the families response the first section is the families emotional responses the first one being Depression and anxiety, followed by anger then guilt, and uncertainty. Then the article talks about how role changes begin to take place and you have to get used to doing what your loved one with Alzheimers did. The article then goes into how if you have a loved one with Alzheimers how their can be difficult Social Situations that may be difficult to explain, and with that comes how you tell people that your loved one has Alzheimers. Finally the article addresses

New 5 how you think about the future like putting the person with Alzheimers in assisted living or how you can help them. The Rhetoric used in the article I thought worked well I thought the source had good credibility not only because the article was from an edu website but it was from North Western University an established medical school. The article also had very good appeal to fact they were able to use first hand experience and knew extremely well what they were talking about. Finally the emotional appeal in the article I thought was good although this article was more informative than anything else you couldnt help but feeling when you heard about some of the sad stages that the loved ones of people who have Alzheimers have. Overall I thought he essay used Rhetoric very well. This article helped me in my understanding of the affects that Alzheimers disease has on the family of the patient. This affected my thinking in helping me better understand what families with a Alzheimers diagnosed member go through, it also gave new insight as to some of the difficulties the family has to go through some of the things I hadnt thought of. The difference between this article and the other articles is the first hand insights into the families experience with a loved one with Alzheimers. No other source that I have gives the families experience with Alzheimers. This relates to my essay in that it gives me some of what the family has to go through when a loved one has Alzheimers disease.

4. "Emotional Side Effects." Of Cancer and Treatment. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Apr. 2014. The article the Emotional side Effect talks about some of the emotional side effects that cancer has on not only the patient but the patients loved ones. It does this by letting people write their experiences with cancer. It starts to talk about coping with

New 6 cancer in everyday life it talk about how people deal with their feelings in certain situations that go along with having cancer. The article then goes into the anxiety, fear and depression that often comes with having depression. It then goes into how some people have coped with having a loved one with cancer. Finally it talks about the attitudes that people have towards cancer and some of the attitudes that have worked well in dealing with cancer. The Rhetoric that was used in this article was interesting. I though the ethos of the paper was great it came from a well trusted web site in www.cancer.org and anybody that had a loved on diagnosed with cancer could write on the page. I thought the appeal to fact was probably the weakest part no one really used statistics or any hard fact in their stories, it was mostly experiences which can be exposed to bias. The emotional appeal was the strongest part of this paper you got to hear fist hand what it was like to have someone in your family diagnosed with cancer. Overall I thought the Rhetoric in this paper was used very well especially the emotional appeal. These articles gave me good insight into how people cope with loved ones being diagnosed with cancer. It also gave me first hand experienced into what it was like for the family and the patient to live with cancer. This relates very well into my final paper it gives me a good view of cancer patients and family like the previous article did with Alzheimers. Now I have views of what its like for families that are affected by both the diseases that I am looking at in my paper. 5. "Healthy Brain Versus Alzheimer's Brain Alzheimer's Association." N.p., n.d. Web. 30

Mar. 2014.

New 7 This article shows you a healthy brain versus a brain with Alzheimers. It begins to talk about how Alzheimers leads to nerve death, and how the brain shrinks dramatically due to this. It shows a picture of a healthy brain and then a brain with Alzheimers. It then shows you an image under a microscope and how the brain with Alzheimers has not only less nerves but less synapses, which is what the brain uses to transport the nerves, this greatly affect the speed of which the memory is recovered and the memory itself. Overall this article breaks down the differences between a healthy brain and I diagnosed brain. The Rhetoric that was used in the article was very helpful to my understanding of the subject. The source has credibility first of all because the information from the source comes from the Alzheimers Association, and secondly because the author of the source is a brain doctor. The appeal to fact was one of the strongest appeals in the paper they used significant findings in the Alzheimers field to give you easily accessible information on the effects of the disease. There was not emotional appeal in the document but there did not need to be the articles goal was to inform and it did that. So overall the Rhetoric in the article worked very well in the goal to inform people of the effects of Alzheimers disease. This article affected my thinking in the way that know I know more about the disease of Alzheimers. This semester I have had the opportunity to take a human Biology class in which we have talked greatly about what causes cancer and the effect it has, but I did not know this about Alzheimers. This article helped to give me a brief summary of the disease and what it does. So know I have information on both the diseases that I am looking at, giving me better knowledge into what each disease does.

New 8 In conclusion I gained insight to the effects that both Alzheimers and cancer has on the patients family. I was also able to get a brief view on what kind of funding goes into Alzheimers disease. Through my research I was also able to gain knowledge of first hand experiences into each disease. Overall my research will help to gain insight to each disease that I am looking at, and help me answer the question what disease needs more funding Alzheimers or Cancer in terms of effect on the family and the patient? The research will give me insight into both diseases and both affects that each disease has.
