Albert Harry "Buck" Bartles Sr., 86, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Oct. 13,
2009, at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md. Born Feb. 5, 1923, at
Huyetts Crossroads in Washington County, he was the son of the late Albert
E. and Anna E. Hamby Bartles.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Conrail in
1986 after 45 years of railway service. He was active in the United
Transportation Union Local 633. He was a member of Emmanuel United
Methodist Church. He was a York Rite Mason, member of Friendship Lodge
84 AF&AM, Queen Esther Chapter 3 Order of the Eastern Star, Hagerstown
Lodge 378 of the Elks, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, VFW Post
1936, AMVETS Post 10, 733rd Railway Operating Battalion Association of World War II, Junior
and South End Fire Companies, National Railway Historical Society Chapter 161 and the
Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum. He also served on the Democratic State Central Committee,
the advisory board to Victor Cullen School and served on the Board of Supervisors of Elections
for Washington County.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian L. McNamee Bartles, whom he married Dec. 24, 1943; one
daughter, Patricia Ann Brewer of New Cumberland, Pa.; two sons, David Bartles of Falling
Waters, W.Va., and Albert H. Bartles Jr. of Hagerstown; six sisters, Martha J. Hose of
Williamsport, and Dorothy C. Lowry, Ruth I. Keyser, Anna Mae Rubeck, Sarah K. Robinson and
Susan R. Whittington, all of Hagerstown; one brother, John E. Bartles Sr. of Maugansville; eight
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son; a sister,
Mary G. Gehr; and two brothers, Willie E. Bartles and Clyde R. Bartles Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd.
with the Rev. Randall Reid officiating. Burial will be at Broadfording Cemetery with graveside
military honors by AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown. The family
will receive friends on Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where a memorial service
will be conducted by Friendship Lodge 84 AF&AM at 6 p.m.
