BASF is expanding its business in indus-
trial coatings in the growth market of
Africa. Since October 2013, the company
has supplied coil coatings to Roofngs
Rolling Mills (RRM), located in Uganda.
BASF and its technical service were also
on hand when the new coil coating lines
were put into operation.
RRM is part of the Roofngs Group,
East Africas largest steel producer. At its
site in Namanve Industrial Park, RRM
operates three production lines with an
annual capacity of 240,000 metric tons.
BASF has supplied a Pevicoat mixing
unit, based on site at RRM. The Pevicoat
unit is a computer-assisted paint mixing
system that can mix any color and gloss
level within a very short time.
With RRM, we have succeeded in
gaining an important long-term partner,
which will allow us to continue to grow
in this key region. Africa is an attractive
market for our industrial coatings, said
Phil Green, business development manag-
er BASFs Coatings division. For RRM,
robust products with high quality and ex-
cellent service are crucial. Thanks to our
team from Vanderbijlpark, we can guaran-
tee this. The coatings and the service are
provided from BASFs site in South Africa.
The African market does play a key
role not only in the BASF strategy, but
especially in the future growth plans of
the Industrial Coatings Solutions unit of
BASF, added Nils Lessmann, BASF busi-
ness manager Precoatings EMEA.
The rise of African markets is a result
of increasing population and urbaniza-
tion rates as well as consumer spending,
Therefore, BASF aims to further expand
the local presence in Africa and tap new
long-term business potential.
Coil coatings are used to coat alumi-
num and steel coils before they are pro-
cessed further into an array of different
products in the construction, household
appliance and automotive industries.
These products range from refrigerators
to building faades. Since the panels are
stamped, rolled and joined, the coating
has to be extremely fexible and elastic
so that it does not fake off. At the same
time, however, it has to meet the require-
ments for scratch resistance.
RRM has invested $125 million in
the site in Uganda, including for the coil
coating line. The company also acquired
technical support from its Japanese part-
ner Yodogawa Steel Works and uses its
technologies. Yodogawa Steel Works has
produced coated coils for 75 years

USGBC Releases the Top 10 States in Nation for LEED Green Building
The U.S. Green Building Council (US-
GBC) recently released its ranking
of the Top 10 States for LEED, the
worlds most widely used and recog-
nized green building rating system.
The list highlights the regions around
the country that are at the forefront of
sustainable building design and trans-
formation. Utilizing less energy, LEED-
certifed spaces save money for fami-
lies, businesses and taxpayers; reduce
carbon emissions; and contribute to
a healthier environment for residents,
workers and the larger community.
The list of the Top 10 States for
LEED is a continuing indicator of the
widespread recognition of our national
imperative to create healthier, high-
performing buildings that are better
for the environment as well as the peo-
ple who use them every day, said Rick
Fedrizzi, president, CEO and found-
ing chair, USGBC. As the economy
recovers, green buildings continue to
provide for jobs at every professional
level and skill set from carpenters to
architects. I congratulate everyone in
these states whose contributions to
resources saved, toxins eliminated,
greenhouse gases avoided, and hu-
man health enhanced help guarantee
a prosperous future for our planet and
the people who call it home.
The per-capita list is based on 2010
U.S. Census data and includes com-
mercial and institutional green building
projects that were certifed throughout
2013. Among states, Illinois moved into
the top position for LEED, certifying
171 projects representing 2.29 square
feet of LEED space per resident.
Both the public and private sec-
tors in Illinois recognize that long-term
investments in 21st century infrastruc-
ture should be done in ways that re-
duce energy consumption and protect
the environment, said Illinois Gov. Pat
Quinn. Illinois is proud to be the na-
tions green buildings leader, and we
are proof that a smaller environmental
footprint can help us step toward en-
ergy independence.
The mid-Atlantic region reigned in
2013 with Washington, D.C., Maryland
and Virginia all topping the list. Wash-
ington, D.C., had 106 LEED-certifed
projects representing 32.45 square
feet of space per resident. Maryland
and Virginia followed Illinois in the sec-
ond and third positions, respectively,
certifying 2.20 and 2.11 square feet of
LEED space per resident in 2013.
Newcomers to the top 10 states list
from 2012 include:
Oregon, which certifed 47 proj-
ects representing 1.83 square feet
per resident in 2013;
North Carolina, with 1.80 square
feet per resident;
Hawaii, with 1.71 square feet per
resident; and
Minnesota, with 1.55 square feet
per resident.
New York and California, two of the
most populous states in the nation,
tied for ffth place, with each certifying
1.95 square feet of space per resident
in 2013.
USGBC calculates the list using
per-capita fgures as a measure of the
human element of green building, al-
lowing for a fair comparison of the
level of green building taking place
among states with signifcant differ-
ences in population and, accordingly,
number of overall buildings.
Refecting the continued trend of
LEED existing buildings outpacing
their newly built counterparts, in 2013
the LEED for Building Operations and
Maintenance rating system accounted
for 48 percent of total square footage
certifed in these states. This compares
to 43 percent of square footage certi-
fed under LEED for Building Design
and Construction and 9 percent certi-
fed under LEED for Interior Design
and Construction.
Collectively, 1,777 commercial and
institutional projects became LEED
certifed within the top 10 states
in 2013, representing 226.8 million
square feet of real estate. Worldwide,
4,642 projects were certifed in 2013,
representing 596.8 million square feet.
Cumulatively, more than 20,000
projects representing 2.9 billion
square feet of space have been LEED-
certifed worldwide, with another
37,000 projects representing 7.6 bil-
lion square feet in the pipeline for
certifcation. USGBC launched LEED
v4, the newest version of the rating
system, in the fall of 2013. The latest
version continues to raise the bar for
the entire green building industry,
which McGraw-Hill Construction proj-
ects could be worth up to $248 billion
in the U.S. by 2016. LEED v4 features
increased technical rigor; new market
sector adaptations for data centers,
warehouses and distribution centers,
hospitality, existing schools, existing
retail, and midrise residential projects;
and a simplifed submittal process
supported by a robust and intuitive
technology platform.

The region is one of the
most rapidly growing markets
for car production with Brazil
in the vanguard, said Charlie
Shaver, Axalta chairman and CEO. We
are committed to keeping pace with the
increasing demand for automotive paint
and serving the needs of our customers
who increasingly want the option to con-
vert to waterborne technology.
Axalta is a leading player in the de-
velopment of waterborne technology
for both OEM and refnish customers.
The companys waterborne production
process utilizes a waterborne technol-
ogy system to produce Lean and Green
Automotive Coatings that OEMs can
use to signifcantly reduce volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), energy consumption
and investment, according to the com-
pany. The Lean and Green Automotive
Coating process includes primer-less
coatings and 3-wet coatings that can
achieve full layer performance without
having to fash and bake between coats.
The increased productivity results in a
better bottom line for customers while
still producing an unparalleled fnish on
vehicles. In addition, Axaltas waterborne
products are intrinsically environmentally
responsible and meet global environmen-
tal requirements, such as the EUs VOC
Regulation 2004/42/EC, to which Axalta
adheres in Brazil and that can help reduce
the overall environmental footprint of the
auto industry.
Our decision to invest in Brazil re-
fects not only our commitment to our
customers, but also our confdence in the
Brazilian economy, added Jorge Cossio,
vice president of Axalta Latin America.
The tremendous growth of Brazils con-
sumer market benefts everyone and we
are excited to be able to contribute to the
national success story.
PPG Earns DOE Funding
to Develop IR Window
Coating
PPG Industries fat glass business
has received $312,000 from the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) to develop
a dynamically responsive infrared (IR)
window coating that will block heat in
the summer to reduce air-conditioning
costs and transmit solar heat in the win-
ter to reduce heating costs.
The funding is part of an award of
up to $750,000 being shared with proj-
ect leader Pacifc Northwest National
Laboratory (PNNL). PPG and PNNL
are designing a coating that can switch
from a solar IR-refecting state to a solar
IR-transmitting state while maintaining
high levels of daylight transmittance in
either condition. PPG will provide an ad-
ditional $78,000 in cost-sharing.
The development of such a coating
would represent a major advance com-
pared to current thermochromic window
technology, which involves coatings that
darken and block visible light when ex-
posed to high volumes of IR energy, and
existing electrochromic window tech-
nology, which relies on external power
sources such as electricity to balance tint-
ing and light transmittance.
The new PPG/PNNL coating tech-
nology also has the potential to be in-
expensive, which will help ensure that
dynamically responsive IR windows are
an economical option for use in residen-
tial and commercial retroft applications.
Mehran Arbab, PPG director of glass
science and technology, said PPG appreci-
ates the DOEs continuing support of its
work to investigate cutting-edge energy-
effcient glass and window technologies.
PPGs glass business is tightly focused
on energy-effciency research and devel-
opment for windows and more, he said.
Not only is it a market driver for our
company, we believe it is simply the right
thing to do.
The two-year project is designed to de-
velop dynamically responsive IR window
coatings on a laboratory scale. If develop-
ment is successful, the product could be
scaled up and potentially commercialized
within several years. PPG also collaborated
recently with PNNL to develop and study
waste-heat recovery technologies to save
energy in the glass manufacturing process.

nanocomposite coatings im-
part wear and corrosion resistance to
metal surfaces and reduce friction in
sliding wear applications. The PComP
cermet coatings are easy to apply and
machine to tight tolerances for dimen-
sional restoration of worn industrial
components. The PComP family of
coating materials has been designed to
act as a drop-in replacement for com-
peting thermal spray materials that can
be used in existing application systems
based on a unique, patented coating
microstructure that combines the high
hardness zones of a ductile metal in an
optimal geometry. PComP coatings are
up to 70 percent lighter than tungsten
carbide (WC) coatings, and up to 40
percent lighter than the hard chrome
alternative due to the use of light and
low-cost, nitride-based reinforcements.
BASF Green Sense Concrete
Technology Available in the
European Market
BASF now offers its Green Sense Concrete
technology for the resource-effcient pro-
duction and processing of concrete in
Europe as well. Green Sense Concrete is
a service package from BASF that helps
manufacturers improve the performance
characteristics of concrete such as resil-
ience, workability, durability and envi-
ronmental friendliness.
The package comprises three compo-
nents: The optimization of the concrete
mix design by BASF experts, the use of
hyperplasticizers from BASF such as
MasterGlenium, and an eco effciency
analysis of the concrete mix. The analysis
serves to ascertain economic and ecologi-
cal performance criteria of the concrete
in comparison to traditional concrete
mix designs. The use of the Green Sense
Concrete technology has for example led
to savings of around 15,800 tons of CO2
equivalents and approximately 25,400
megawatt hours of energy in the con-
struction of the new One World Trade
Center in New York City compared with
a conventional concrete mix design. In
this way, BASF provides solutions for
urgent challenges of the construction in-
dustry such as the high share in primary
energy consumption, in greenhouse gases
and in fne dust emissions.

UK Paint Sales Up for Eighth Month in a Row
The latest results from the coatings industry, supplied by the British Coatings Fed-
eration, refect the more positive developments in UK construction and manu-
facturing activity, with Q4 2013 sales volumes up seven percent versus the same
quarter in 2012, signifcantly outperforming the overall output numbers for the
economy in the same period.
Decorative and industrial coatings sectors performed particularly well, adding
support to the view that the UK economy is fnally turning the corner, although
printing ink and wallcoverings sales remaining subdued.
In the decorative sector, trade paint sales increased for the eighth month in a
row with volumes in the last quarter up 11 percent on a year ago boosted by the
continued recovery in the housing and construction markets. The results mirror
improvements in construction products in general, where growth has increased
sharply in recent months and where the outlook remains upbeat for 2014.
Consumer confdence has also improved in recent months and this is now
being refected in the hard pressed retail paint sector which is also beginning
to show some encouraging increases in recent months with the last quarter as a
whole up fve percent on a year ago.
On the industrial coatings side, the picture is more mixed but there have
been increases in fve of the past 6 months after a very diffcult start to 2013.
Sales litreage in December was up nine percent and by 2.5 percent for the last
quarter as a whole being broadly in line with the growth in UK manufacturing
output which is now also showing more steady growth.
The British Coatings Federation statistics provide a unique barometer for the
UK economy, and overall we are outperforming the general manufacturing output
numbers with this performance, which should warm the hearts of even the most
pessimistic amongst us, said Tom Bowtell, BCFs CEO.

BASF Supplies Paints for
Innovative Electric Car
BASF and BMW have once again teamed
up, this time for the i3, the BMW Groups
frst model driven entirely by electric
power. BASF is supplying basecoats in
four colors for the new i3 production line
at the BMW plant in Leipzig. The i3 was
launched in November 2013.
With the paints, BASF is contribut-
ing to the i3s unique design, which is
exceptionally clean, reduced but, at the
same time, dynamic. The i3 has another
special feature that also extends to the
coating: The passenger compartment is
made of carbon-fber-reinforced plastic
(CFRP). We are very pleased to be a
partner of the BMW Group also for
this innovative model. Driving sustain-
able solutions is one of BASFs stra-
tegic principles, said Dr. Alexander
Haunschild, head of Automotive OEM
Coatings Europe at BASF.
The car consists of a CFRP body-in-
white on which the coated plastic add-on
parts are mounted. This concept means
new challenges for the coating of the
add-on parts and for the associated ap-
plication processes. BASFs many years
of experience in coating add-on parts has
paid off. Frank Naber, BASFs Account
Manager for BMW Europe, explained:
Our laboratory teams joined forces with
the BMW Group to develop a coating
for the special construction of the i3. In
Leipzig, we also provide technical feld
service on site on a daily basis.
BASF has been a supplier for the BMW
plant in Leipzig since its start-up in 2005
and provides the automotive manufactur-
er with modern paint systems worldwide.
PPG Commercial Coatings
Expands Offering of ECK
Products
PPG Industries has formed an agreement
between the commercial coatings group
of its automotive refnish business and
Van Nay, LLC, to expand the line of
ECK corrosion-prevention products that
PPG distributes. PPG now offers the full
line of ECK products, adding quart and
aerosol versions to the squeeze tubes it
already offered.
`We are pleased to add the quart and
aerosol products to our already success-
ful ECK squeeze tubes, said J. J. Wirth,
PPG commercial brand manager, feet seg-
ments, U.S. and Canada. ECK is a very
effective safeguard against corrosion. By
providing a full line of ECK products to
PPG customers, I believe we will enhance
their success with additional options to
prevent corrosion.
According to PPG, ECK (Electrolysis
Corrosion Kontrol) products, developed
by Van Nay, use a patented compound
that provides a cost-effective way to avoid
expensive repairs caused by dissimilar
metal corrosion. Aluminum products as-
sembled with stainless-steel fasteners are
naturally corrosive. Applying the zinc-rich
ECK coating prevents the electrolytic reac-
tion. By forming a long-lasting, moisture-
resistant barrier between dissimilar metals,
ECK coating outperforms traditional
methods of corrosion prevention such as
the use of silicone-based products and
plastic insulating tape applications. ECK
products can also be used to prevent bolts
and fasteners from galling and seizing.
ECK products are ideal for heavy-duty
truck bodies, military vehicles, trailers, ag-
ricultural and construction equipment and
a variety of other metallic applications.
BASF is supplying basecoats in four

Sherwin-Williams Foundation Awards $50,000 Grant to CHRIS Kids
After a national competition, The Sherwin-Williams
Company has awarded its annual signature grant to
CHRIS Kids, a local nonproft in East Atlanta focused on
child welfare and behavioral health.
The $50,000 grant expands therapy groups, skill
training groups and parenting, which are provided
by CHRIS Kids at the CHRIS Counseling Center
(CCC). Conducted by licensed therapists and staff,
these groups are crucial to children who are heal-
ing from the trauma of sexual, physical, and emo-
tional abuse and neglect.
These groups help them heal, create positive re-
lationships, and unlock their potential for success.
The Sherwin-Williams Foundation grant will
enable the CHRIS Counseling Center to help many
more children and families, especially very young
mothers and their children by providing a variety of
groups targeted to areas of need, including recovery from the traumas of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect,
homelessness, and substance abuse, said Kathy Colbenson, CEO of CHRIS Kids. Thanks to Sherwin-Williams, poten-
tial will be unlocked, cycles of abuse will be broken and children can grow up to become contributing adults.
The Sherwin-Williams Foundation is very pleased to support the inspirational work of CHRIS Kids, said Chris Con-
nor, chairman and CEO of The Sherwin-Williams Company. Their mission of healing children, strengthening families
and building community shows how a Public-Private partnership can offer a helping hand to children and families in
need. Over our 148 year history, Sherwin-Williams has always reached out to the communities where we do business.
The driving force of the Sherwin-Williams Foundation is our commitment to enhancing education and childrens health
and safety.
Small groups of 6-10 children meet regularly, with one or two highly trained clinical staff. Children learn skills to cope
and adjust to a variety of lifes challenges and begin to heal from the effects of trauma. Some groups may focus on a
specifc subject such as substance abuse, while others may be more general in nature. Goals include: (1) increased coping
and life skills; (2) increased connections with peers; (3) increased opportunity to practice learned skills in a safe, support-
ive setting; and (4) increased success and satisfaction. This grant allows CHRIS Kids to focus on increasing and improving
CHRIS Counseling Center services to best meet the multiple and complex needs of the children, youth and families we
serve every year who are suffering from the effects of trauma.

of liquid crystals as vectors to translate DNA across membrane
walls in the human body.
Axalta to Invest $60 Million to Build
Waterborne Industrial Coatings Production
Plant in Germany
Axalta Coating Systems recently announced a commitment to
invest $60 million in Wuppertal, Germany to build a next-gen-
eration facility that will expand capacity to produce waterborne
industrial coatings. Production at the new operations center is
expected to begin in the frst quarter of 2015.
The investment will reinforce the Wuppertal site, already
the largest of Axaltas 35 manufacturing facilities around the
world, and Germany as the center of Axaltas water-based paint
manufacturing operations in its Europe, Middle East and Africa
(EMEA) region. The investment underscores the companys
commitment to environmentally responsible waterborne coat-
ings for Axalta customers in the automotive OEM and refnish,
commercial transportation, general industrial, and architectural
and decorative segments. In addition to manufacturing products
for Western Europe, products made in Wuppertal will continue
to be exported to Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The next-generation facility will use manufacturing technol-
ogy that will improve effciencies, reduce waste and shrink even
further the environmental footprint from operations while at
the same time meeting the growing needs of Axalta custom-
ers. Additional production of waterborne coatings is a direct
response to customers growing interest in environmentally re-
sponsible coatings.
Were tremendously excited about our ability to build new
facilities in Europe and especially in Wuppertal, explained
Axalta Chairman and CEO Charlie Shaver. Germany is syn-
onymous with some of the fnest automotive engineering in the
world and home to some of our key customers. Building on our
great legacy that originated in Wuppertal in 1866, we are opti-
mistic about an ever-expanding customer base for us to serve in
the future.
The facility will manufacture coatings for some of the larg-
est European automotive original equipment manufacturers. A
number of Axaltas leading refnish brands, including our global
fagship brands Standox, Spies Hecker and Cromax used by
body shops, will also be manufactured at the new facility, help-
ing to expand its offerings of the newest generation of water-
borne paints.
Our decision to invest in Germany refects not only our
commitment to our customers but also our confdence in the
German and larger EMEA economy, explained Otmar Hauck,
Axaltas chief operating offcer in the EMEA region. Building
in Wuppertal also is a tribute to our employees and their dedica-
tion both to our company and our customers.
Axalta is one of the leading players in the development of
waterborne technology for both OEM and refnish customers.

New National Paint Alliance
Formed by Nine Regional
Manufacturers To Sell
Across North America
A new specifcation option out of the
paint industry is available through a stra-
tegic alliance forged among nine regional
coatings manufacturers: The National
Paint Alliance (NPA).
The NPA provides access to compre-
hensive coatings portfolios, each for-
mulated to perform in varied regional
conditions; and extensive professional
feld support ensures that each job, at
each location, has the best product speci-
fed to deliver the best outcome.
The nine manufacturers that form
this alliance are dominant players in
their respective regions and represent
a diverse geographic cross section:
Miller Paint in Portland, Oregon; Kelly-
Moore Paint in San Carlos, California;
Dunn-Edwards Paints in Los Angeles,
California; Diamond Vogel Paint in
Orange City, Iowa; Farrell-Calhoun Paint
in Memphis, Tennessee; OLeary Paint in
Lansing, Michigan; McCormick Paint in
Rockville, Maryland; SunColor Paints
in Orlando, Florida; Cloverdale Paint in
Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
Economists recognize that local busi-
nesses are the engine that drives the
economy and job generation. According
to Jeff Child, executive director of the
newly minted NPA, this translates into
several tangible benefts for national ac-
count corporations working with the
NPA. These regional manufacturers
have built their business on high quality,
price competitive products and the ability
to react to their customers needs in a very
nimble manner. Support of these manu-
facturers clearly illustrates the national
accounts commitment to the local com-
munities in which they do business.
The National Paint Alliance under-
stands the marketplace dynamics and
the need for performance-proven re-
gional formulations along with local ex-
pertise and rapid response, said Child.
Meetings with a breadth of national ac-
count managers allowed us to determine
that national chainsfrom Target to Wal-
Mart, from Hilton Hotels to Marriott
International, and from Cushman &
Wakefeld to Winn Companies are lim-
ited in their ability to specify anything

expertise so that a national chain can now
have the best possible coating for each of
their buildings, no matter where they are
located, while receiving the best service
and local trouble shooting, added Child.
The NPA member manufacturers, with
a combined 400 feld representatives, 16
manufacturing facilities, and 520 retail
stores across the U.S. and Canada offer a
coordinated, regionally-formulated and
manufactured portfolio of coatings which
provide superior performance and durabili-
ty. Child stressed that the NPA products are
the better alternative to a national for-
mulation marketed to ft all environments.
Child further shared that no longer
will specifers, including the architects
who start the specifcation process at
the very beginning of a construction
project, have to depend on a one size
fts all scenario for their paint and coat-
ings requirements.
Color expertise abounds across all
of the NPA member companies each
guarantees exact color matches and 100
percent color fdelity to whatever nation-
al manufacturers color is specifed, said
Child. Computer color matching is an
industry standard and each of the NPA
members have extensive color expertise,
with, collectively, some of the best color
formulators in the industry on their staffs.
And, of course, their expertise and un-
derstanding of regional color preferences
and how local environmental conditions,
especially natural light, impacts the read-
ing of color in their regions, is the back-
bone of their color counsel.
The comprehensive, combined prod-
uct portfolio and local feld support
provided by the nine regional
manufacturers allows them to
offer coordinated coatings to
their customers. Child shared
that the NPA is confdent it offers the
broadest choice, the best performance
since all products are formulated for the
specifc geographic areas in which they
were invented and manufactured, and the
largest technical team in the industry.

co-inventors came up with a strategy to
make layers of plastic with very well-de-
fned small pores, similar to moth eyes. But
by making the pores larger than they are
in most other types of moth eye coatings,
they were able to incorporate titanium di-
oxide nanocrystals into the structure.
These nanocrystals are photocatalytic
- when light falls on them, they start to
break down the dirt clogging the pores,
until all that is left is carbon dioxide, and
water which evaporates off the surface,
rendering the material self-cleaning.
In early tests of the material, the tita-
nium dioxide nanoparticles were able to
break down all of the oils contained in a
fngerprint within 90 minutes. The coat-
ing is capable of breaking down most
of the standard hydrocarbons that clog
most porous antirefective coatings.
The breakthrough research is the frst
time that these nanoparticles have been
effectively incorporated into antirefective
coatings, raising the possibility of antire-
fective, self-cleaning glass or plastic. The
coating adheres to the substrate through
sol-gel chemistry, resulting in a durable
bond and a coating which will not fake off.
While the material is currently only
suitable for outdoor applications as it re-
quires ultraviolet light for photocatalysis
to occur, the team are planning more tests
to see if the material could be adapted in
future for indoor light, which would open
up a wide range of potential applications.
is currently looking at applications
in building glass and solar cells, as much
of the sunlight solar cells are meant to
capture and convert to energy simply
bounces off the surface, and current anti-
refective coatings become easily clogged
with dirt. When generating energy from
solar cells, you have to fght for every per-
centage gain in effciency, said Professor
Steiner. The coating weve developed
combines two interesting scientifc prin-
ciples, and could increase the amount of
light getting into the solar cells.

BDC Offers Grants to
Explore Bio-based Projects
The Biorenewables Development Centre
(BDC), a not-for-proft company based at
the University of York, announced its new
funding opportunity, the Biorenewables
Capital Grant Scheme (BCGS), for
Yorkshire and Humber-based small- to
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) wishing
to explore commercial feasibility of bio-
based projects.
The BCGS is available to eligible SMEs
to implement pilot-technologies in the
biorenewables area and provides 64
percent of the funding towards the
purchase of capital equipment (up to
32,000 per SME), with the additional
36 percent to be matched privately by
the SME. Available in three funding
calls in 2014, the BCGS is a competi-
tive grant scheme and expects to fund
around 26 projects, with a combined
project value of 1M.
This is a fantastic opportunity for
regional SMEs to invest in innovative
green technologies, for example by
turning their plant or food wastes into
useful products, said Fabien Deswarte,
business development unit manager at
the BDC.
The BCGS aims to support local
businesses by providing access to tech-
nologies to convert plants, microbes and
biowastes into proftable green prod-
ucts; and adds to the funded services
the BDC is able to provide to regional
SMEs through grants from the European
Regional Development Fund.
The region is perfectly placed to
drive innovations in biorenewables
through its unique combination of
industry, agriculture and world-class
research, commented Joe Ross, direc-
tor at the BDC. This funding provides
an excellent opportunity to harness
the regions capabilities and help es-
tablish Yorkshire and the Humber as
a leader in the bioeconomy, which,
across Europe, has a reported worth of
around 2 trillion.
The BDC is a not-for-profit com-
pany, based at the University of York
that helps businesses develop ways to
convert plants, microbes and biowastes
into profitable biorenewable products.
Using cutting-edge science and tech-
nology, BDC bridges the gap between
academia and industry to assist compa-
nies both in development and scale-up
of new greener processes and products.

OSHA Issues 2014
Inspection Plan to Reduce
Injuries and Illnesses
The Occupational Safety and Health
Administration has issued its annual
inspection plan under the Site-Specific
Targeting 2014 program to direct en-
forcement resources to workplaces
where the highest rates of injuries and
illnesses occur. The SST program is
one of OSHAs main programmed in-
spection plans for high-hazard, non-
construction workplaces that have
20 or more workers. The SST plan is
based on data collected from a sur-
vey of 80,000 establishments in high-
hazard industries. By focusing our
inspection resources on employers in
high hazard industries who endanger
their employees, we can prevent inju-
ries and illnesses and save lives, said
Assistant Secretary of Labor
for Occupational Safety and
Health David Michaels. As
part of the SST-14 program,
OSHA is conducting a study to evalu-
ate the effectiveness of the program
based on 1,260 randomly selected
establishments. Programmed inspec-
tions of nursing and personal care
establishments will continue under
OSHAs Nursing and Personal Care
Facilities National Emphasis Program.
In addition to the SST program, OSHA
implements both national and local
emphasis inspection programs, which
include programmed inspections, to
target high-risk hazards and industries.
OSHA currently has 13 National
Emphasis Programs that intensify in-
spections on hazards or industries such
as lead, silica, shipbreaking, trenching/
excavations and process safety manage-
ment, and approximately 140 Regional
and Local Emphasis Programs. CW

Akzo Nobel N.V. (AkzoNobel) has
announced its Q4 and full-year 2013
results. Revenue for the year totaled
14,590 million, down 5 percent on
2012 as a consequence of adverse cur-
rency effects and divestments. 2013
operating income excluding inciden-
tals came in at 897 million (2012:
908 million excluding impairment).
Net income attributable to sharehold-
ers reached 724 million, up from
386 million in 2012. Net debt came
down by a third to 1,529 million at
the end of 2013. The company has
successfully completed its multi-year
performance improvement program
a year ahead of schedule, exceed-
ing its targets in doing so. In 2014,
AkzoNobel will continue to signifi-
cantly restructure to reduce costs
further and anticipates related restruc-
turing charges of at least 250 million.
We indicated at the start of 2013
that trading conditions would continue
to be challenging and that has proven
to be the case, said CEO Ton Bchner.
In response we accelerated our com-
pany-wide improvement actions and
have brought our performance im-
provement program to a successful
conclusion a year ahead of schedule
and above target. While the first half of
2013 was impacted by weaker trading
conditions and specific one-off events
in Specialty Chemicals, the second half
has shown early signs of stabilization
in several end markets. In combina-
tion with our restructuring actions this
positive effect has been evident in our
improving return on sales in the third
and fourth quarters, despite foreign
currency headwinds. In 2014, we will
continue to improve our ability to le-
verage our strong brands and lead-
ing market positions. We will further
restructure our business, reduce our
costs and drive organic growth. I am
confident that we are on track to de-
liver on our 2015 strategic goals.
Business performance
Decorative Paints full-year revenue was
down 3 percent as a result of adverse cur-
rency effects and divestments. Global vol-
umes for the year were up 3 percent, with
increases in all regions except Europe,
which remained fat in a refection of dif-
fcult trading conditions. The pick-up in
overall volumes was particularly notice-
able in the second half of the year; Q3
and Q4 volumes were each up 5 percent
compared with the prior year. Margins im-
proved as a result of strong margin man-
agement and lower raw material prices.
Performance improvement and restruc-
turing measures led to a lower cost base,
which, combined with lower restructuring
charges, drove operating income above the
previous year, before the divestment gain
on Building Adhesives.
Full-year revenue at Performance
Coatings declined 2 percent on fat vol-
umes as adverse currency effects out-
weighed a positive price/mix development.
Volumes gradually improved throughout
the year to be fat overall, and up 2 per-
cent in Q4. Margins were maintained de-
spite higher restructuring costs. Operating
income for the year as a whole was down
3 percent, with underlying improvements
offset by higher restructuring charges as
well as adverse currencies. Restructuring
activities were accelerated in the fourth
quarter, with the intended closure of seven
sites world-wide being communicated.
Specialty Chemicals annual revenues
not only refected a year of continued soft
demand, but also included a signifcant
divestment effect from the sale in 2012 of
Chemicals Pakistan. Full-year revenues
were down 11 percent, with 6 percent at-
tributable to divestments and 2 percent a
consequence of adverse currency effects.
Lower volumes accounted for a further 2
percent revenue decline, although they did
stabilize in the second half of the year and
volumes in Q4 were up 3 percent versus
Q4 2012. Full-year operating income was
impacted by increased restructuring costs
versus the previous year, with a comprehen-
sive performance improvement program
implemented at Functional Chemicals in
the second half of the year. The divestments
of both the Primary Amides and Purate
businesses were completed in Q4.
Performance improvement program
The performance improvement program
(PIP) announced in October 2011 has ex-
ceeded the anticipated cumulative amount
of 500 million in EBITDA for the period
through 2013. The program has delivered
a total of 545 million in benefts a year
earlier than originally planned and has now
been completed. Further effciency and cost
reduction measures have been identifed as
part of continuous improvement initiatives
which are integrated in the regular business
activities. Total restructuring costs for 2013
amounted to 348 million (2012: 292
million), of which 204 million in Q4.
AkzoNobel anticipates 2014 restructuring
charges of at least 250 million.
Raw materials
Full-year average raw material costs sta-
bilized during the year and were down
versus 2012.
Proposed dividend
Our dividend policy is to pay a stable to ris-
ing dividend. We will propose a 2013 fnal
dividend of 1.12 per share, which would
make a total 2013 dividend of 1.45 per
share. This is stable versus the total divi-
dend per share paid out in 2012 of 1.45.

sustainability strategy focused at
creating more value from fewer
resources. Building on its num-
ber one position in the Materials industry
group on the Dow Jones Sustainability
Indices (DJSI), AkzoNobel keeps intensi-
fying its activities to implement the strat-
egy which includes the following targets:
In 2020, AkzoNobels eco-premium
products with a downstream beneft will
account for 20 percent of revenue. In
2013 this was 18%;
Carbon emissions will be reduced by
25 to 30 percent per ton of product by
2020 (base 2012).
Outlook
Although we have seen early signs of
stabilization in the second half of 2013
in some of our businesses, the economic
environment remains fragile and foreign
currencies volatile. We will continue to
signifcantly restructure our businesses
in 2014 to reduce our cost base further
to offset the expected continued soft de-
mand. AkzoNobel is on track to deliver
on its 2015 targets of ROS at 9.0 percent
and ROI at 14.0 percent with a net debt/
EBITDA ratio lower than 2.0.
BASF Increases 2013 Sales
and Earnings
BASF increased sales and earnings in 2013
compared with the previous year. 2013
was again a demanding year, with a lot of
headwind for our industry. Nevertheless,
we achieved our goal: We sold more,
worked more closely together with our
customers and enhanced our portfolio,
said Kurt Bock, chairman of the Board
of Executive Directors of BASF SE at the
Annual Press Conference in Ludwigshafen.
Sales of BASF Group in the fourth
quarter of 2013 were 18.1 billion,
slightly above the same period of the
previous year. Volumes increased in all
segments. Sales prices were slightly lower
overall in the fourth quarter; negative
currency effects lowered sales in all divi-
sions. Acquisitions contributed to sales
growth, particularly in the Oil & Gas and
Agricultural Solutions segments.
Income from operations (EBIT) be-
fore special items improved in all oper-
ating segments in the fourth quarter and
increased by 223 million to 1.5 bil-
lion. EBIT rose by 584 million to 1.6
billion. This included special income of
429 million from the reclassifcation of
GASCADE Gastransport GmbH. This
joint venture had previously been fully
consolidated. Since December 31, 2013,
GASCADE has been accounted for using
the equity method in the BASF Group f-
nancial statements due to a change in the
voting rights in their supervisory board.
For the full year, sales rose by just
under three percent to reach 74.0 bil-
lion. A considerable, mainly volumes-
driven sales increase in the Oil & Gas
and Agricultural Solutions segments was
largely responsible for this development.
Sales slightly declined in the chemicals
business, which includes the Chemicals,
Performance Products and Functional
Materials & Solutions segments, despite
higher sales volumes. This was mainly on
account of negative currency effects. EBIT
before special items in 2013 rose by 543
million to 7.2 billion. In addition to the
successful business with crop protection
products and a higher contribution from
the Functional Materials & Solutions seg-
ment, this increase was also due in large
part to the earnings improvement in Other.
Net income amounted to 4.8 billion,
slightly above the previous years level.
Earnings per share rose from 5.25 to
5.27. Adjusted earnings per share amount-
ed to 5.37, 0.27 under the previous year.
Valspar Reports Fiscal 2014
First-Quarter Results
The Valspar Corporation reported frst
quarter 2014 net sales of $956 mil-
lion, an increase of nine percent over
the prior year. Reported net income and
earnings per diluted share for the cur-
rent year includes nonrecurring items,
which are detailed in the Reconciliation
of Non-GAAP Financial Measures in-
cluded in this release. First quarter 2014
adjusted net income and earnings per
diluted share, excluding these nonrecur-
ring items, were $61 million and $0.70,
respectively. First quarter 2013 adjusted
net income and earnings per diluted share
were $55 million and $0.60, respectively.
We are pleased to report a good start
to our fscal year with frst quarter sales
increasing nine percent over the previous
year and diluted EPS (as adjusted) up
17 percent, said Gary E. Hendrickson,
chairman and chief executive offcer.
We saw strong growth in both our
Paints and Coatings segments, refect-
ing the benefts of new business wins,
acquisitions and productivity improve-
ments. We remain focused on executing
our signifcant new business initiatives
and productivity plans to drive growth
in fscal 2014.
Net sales in the Paints segment in-
creased 10 percent to $361 million
in the frst quarter of 2014, primar-
ily driven by strong volume growth in
the U.S., China and improving volume
in Australia. Adjusted earnings before
interest and taxes (EBIT) increased 50
percent to $34 million. Paints segment
adjusted EBIT margins increased ap-
proximately 250 bps to 9.4 percent.
The growth in EBIT margins was pri-
marily due to higher volume, improved
mix and increased proftability in our
international markets.
Net sales in the Coatings segment in-
creased 10 percent to $549 million in the
frst quarter of 2014, primarily driven by
acquisitions and the continued growth
of our wood product line. Coatings seg-
ment adjusted EBIT increased six percent
to $79 million. EBIT margins decreased
in the quarter by approximately 60 bps
to 14.3 percent, driven primarily by the
impact of acquisitions.
The company reaffrmed its full year
diluted EPS (as adjusted) guidance of
$3.95 to $4.15. CW

unit. Unfortunately, despite these ef-
forts, a price increase is necessary to
ensure the high level of product quality
and consistency and industry-leading
service our customers expect.
Hubers industrial calcium carbonate
products are used in a variety of consumer
and industrial applications, including ad-
hesives, caulks and sealants, paints and
coatings, drilling fuids, rubber, thermoset

BASF will increase prices in Europe, Africa
and Western Asia for straight acrylic and
acrylic styrene polymer dispersions by up
to 80 per metric ton and for redispersible
acrylic powders and acrylic resins by up to
120 per metric ton. The price increase is
necessary due to the signifcant rise in the
cost of raw materials. The products af-
fected by the price increase are used as
polymers for construction chemicals and
fber bonding.

quality intermediate that is used primar-
ily for the production of alkyd resins,
which are used in paints and coatings.
It also serves to produce lubricants.
Neopentyl glycol (NPG) is a high-qual-
ity intermediate used, for example, to
produce polyester resins for coatings,
unsaturated polyester resins, lubricants
and plasticizers.

According to a study by the consulting
frm Kusumgar, Nerlf & Growney, the
global consumption of coatings was 80
billion pounds in 2013 valued at $120
billion. The industry has recovered from
the 2008-2009 global recession and a fve
percent average annual rate of growth
is forecast through 2018. This modest
rate of advance is being propelled large-
ly by the strong growth in the emerging
economies of the Asia-Pacifc region.
Consumption in Asia-Pacifc, particularly
China and India, has surged and is up
by approximately 50 percent in pounds
from 2008.
The Asia-Pacifc region is the leading
coating consumer with 45 percent of the
volume and 40 percent of the value in
2013. Growth is placed at 8 percent/year
and its share is projected to rise to 51 per-
cent of the pounds and 46 percent of the
dollars in 2018. China is 58 percent of
the regions volume and India 13 percent.
Europe is the second largest coating
outlet taking 24 percent of the volume
and 28 percent of the value in 2013. A
mature two percent annual rate is fore-
cast with growth in Russia, Turkey and
other Eastern European countries ex-
panding faster. North America took
17 percent of the global poundage and
21 percent of the dollars. Like Europe
growth is mature and a one percent an-
nual rate is forecast through 2018.
South and Central American coating
usage in 2013 represented eight percent
of the total coating poundage and six
percent of global value. Here growth is
expected to be fve percent per year over
the next fve years. Coating usage in this
region is being driven principally by a
six percent/year increase in Brazil which
accounted for two-thirds of the regions
volume in 2013.
Throughout the world regulations and
consumer demands continue to augment
the growth of cleaner coating technolo-
gies such as water-based, powder and
radcure. Water-based (WB) technology
leads in volume in 2013 with a 52 per-
cent share of the pounds and is second
in value with 40 percent of the dollars.
Some 85 percent of the WB pounds were
architectural paints where the technology
continues to capture share from SB types.
Solvent-based (SB) paints were 41 percent
of the worldwide volume and 48 percent
of the value in 2013. Industrial applica-
tions were 68 percent of the SB pounds
and 80 percent of the dollars. Powder,
radcure and other 100 percent solid liq-
uid coatings are found in industrial ap-
plications and combined for 7 percent of
the pounds and 12 percent of the value
in 2013.
The top 25 suppliers of coatings
combined for 54 percent of the sales in
2013 and the top 100 two-thirds. The
top 100 suppliers of architectural paints
held three-quarters of the sales in 2013
and the top 100 suppliers of industrial
coatings 65 percent. There were 14 com-
panies with coating sales in excess of $1
billion in 2013; two companies had sales
over $10 billion.

attention of many international players.
The growth in the market is driven by
emergence of the middle class in India,
growing infrastructure, increase in the
tendency to spend and growing young
population inclined towards lavish life-
style. On the back of such advocacy, it
is anticipated that the sector will post a
CAGR of approximately 16.2 percent
during 2013-14 to 2015-16, according
to the new research report, Booming
Paint Industry in India.
This research is an outcome of ex-
tensive primary and secondary research
spanning more than months and thor-
ough analysis of industry trends. For
the study, Research and Markets con-
ducted F2F and telephonic interviews
with industry experts such as members
of Indian Paint Association and Paint
manufacturers. In addition, the author
also interviewed more than 200 paint
dealers and consumers all over India to
embrace various aspects of the industry
trends in the report.
The various types of decorative paints
have been further analyzed to understand
the market size and future potential of
various sub-segments such as plastic
emulsions, textured emulsions, synthetic
enamels, acrylic distempers, etc. The
report also classifes decorative paint
market by product class which includes
premium paints, mid-tier paints and econ-
omy paints. Presently, the growth of the
Indian paint industry is being witnessed
from new demand pockets, especially in
Tier-II and Tier-III cities, thus, signalling
the growing acceptance of quality prod-
ucts among the masses. The analysts have
closely studied and provided market fore-
cast till 2015-16 of all sub-segments and
product class.
With the growth of paint industry, the
market for raw material is also intensi-
fying in India. A comprehensive analysis
and forecasting till 2015-16 of raw mate-
rial market is also included mainly focus-
ing on major segments such as pigments,
solvents, binders and additives.
Companies mentioned in the report
include AkzoNobel India, Asian Paints
Limited, Berger Paints India Limited,
Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited and
Shalimar Paints Limited.
Allied Market Research
Finds Global Bio Succinic
Acid Market to Reach
Market Volume of 710 KT
by 2020
Allied Market Research reports that the
U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) con-
siders succinic acid as one among the top
twelve chemical building blocks. Succinic
acid, as a platform chemical, is grow-
ing in demand in various applications.
However, consumption of petroleum
based succinic acid, as an intermediate, in
manufacturing various chemicals, is lim-
ited due to its volatility of price and car-
bon footprints. These concerns led to the
discovery of biological manufacturing of
succinic acid. The bio succinic acid mar-
ket is forecast to grow at a signifcant rate
over the next seven years, according to a
study from Allied Market Research. The
major drivers for this growth will be vol-
atility in fossil fuel prices, rise in carbon
footprints and an interest in using locally
available raw materials. Furthermore, in-
creasing global demand of green chemi-
cals will trigger its adoption in wide range
of applications, especially, in bio plastics,
making it a strong platform chemical.
Bio succinic acid is primarily being
used as a replacement for petrol based
succinic acid in few applications such
as solvents and lubricants, de-icer so-
lutions, cosmetics, food and pharma.
Furthermore, newer application such as
1,4-Butanediol (BDO), PBS, plasticizers
and polyesters polyols market will ac-
celerate the future growth of the market.
Additionally, higher cost of crude oil,
increase in investments for green chemi-
cals, demand for renewable chemicals,
and increase in government support will
further boost the growth of the market.
However, higher price of bio succinic acid
and lengthy extraction processes are pri-
marily restraining the market growth for
the next few years. The global bio based
succinic acid market is expected to reach
market volume of 710.0 kilo tons by
2020, growing at a CAGR of 45.6% dur-
ing 2013-2020.
Various industrial application mar-
kets analyzed in the study includes BDO,
polyester polyols, PBS, plasticizers, res-
ins, coatings, and pigments, solvents
and lubricants, alkyd resins and
de-icer solutions. The resins,
coatings and pigments market
generated maximum revenue
in the year 2013. However, seven years
down the line, BDO is expected to emerge
as the largest application segment. This is
largely due to higher consumption of bio
succinic acid in the production of BDO,
as a replacement of maleic anhydride.
It is estimated that 1.2 MT of bio suc-
cinic acid is needed to replace 1 MT of
maleic anhydride.
Among the four geographic markets,
namely North America, Europe, Asia
Pacifc and RoW; Europe was the largest
consumer of bio succinic acid in 2013.
Stringent regulations in Europe towards
carbon footprints have enabled signif-
cant application of bio succinic acid in
various chemical manufacturing units.
However, Asia Pacifc will be the fastest
growing market with an expected CAGR
of 49.5 percent during 2013 to 2020.
The major companies profled in this
report include BioAmber, Myraint, DSM,
Mitsui & Co, Mitsubishi, BASF, Roquette
Frerse S.A, Purac and Reverdia.
Bio-Based Materials and
Chemicals Capacity to
Reach 13.2 Million MT in
2017, Predicts Lux Research
Bio-based material and chemical (BBMC)
technologies have reached an infection
point with companies scaling to com-
mercial production levels and growing
revenues, according to Lux Research.
The leading growth category will be in-
termediate chemicals like adipic acid and
lactic acid, with capacity growing from
2.0 million metric tons (MT) to 4.9 mil-
lion MT in 2017, while the capacity of
bio-derived polymers currently at 1.1
million MT will grow 18 percent per
year through 2017.
The basic science of bio-based mate-
rials and chemicals has advanced to the
point that dozens of chemicals can now
be produced from multiple feedstocks, at
costs that are competitive with petroleum,
at least in theory and at scale, said Julia
Allen, Lux Research analyst and the lead
author of the report titled, Cultivating
Capacity for Bio-based Materials and

Chemicals through 2017. As
a result, bio-based material and
chemical manufacturers contin-
ue to expand and diversify into
new feedstock types, product types, and
geographical areas.
Lux Research analysts analyzed 229
sites from 217 companies, and 133 chem-
icals and classes like succinic acid and
polyols in seven main product categories
and 22 subcategories.
Among their fndings:
Specialty chemicals like farnesene
will grow at a compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) of 46 percent between now
and 2017.
North America ranks fourth in
global capacity, but will become a leader
by 2017 as American start-ups like Gevo
build plants closer to home. Europes
share of global capacity will drop from
37 percent in 2005 to 14 percent in 2017.
Cellulosic feedstocks struggle. First-
generation sugar/starch feedstocks such
as corn and sugarcane will remain the
dominant bio-based source. Cellulosic
feedstocks will grow relatively slowly,
and the rise of new sources like bio-oils
and waste gas will help lower cellulosics
share from 67 percent to 27 percent.
The report, titled Cultivating
Capacity for Bio-based Materials and
Chemicals through 2017, is part of the
Lux Research Bio-based Materials and
Chemicals Intelligence service.
Asia-Pacifc Remains Major
PTFE Market for Coatings
and Inks
Polytetrafuoroethylene accounts for
the major share of fuoropolymer mar-
ket. PTFE is the linear homopolymer of
TFE with a repeat unit and is made by
polymerizing TFE in water using free
radical initiators. The PTFE market is
experiencing huge growth which is ex-
pected to continue in the near future,
driven by the highly growing Asia-Pacifc
region and intense focus towards indus-
trial expansions, according to a report
from Marketandmarkets. A signifcant
amount of investments are made by vari-
ous market players in order to be pre-
pared to serve the high potential ones
in future. Asia-Pacifc is the major PTFE
market, which accounted for nearly half
of the total global demand in 2012. The
region is further expected to show quite a
high growth in future, mainly due to high
growth potential of the Chinese market.
The industrial goods were the single-
largest application of PTFE, with a mar-
ket share of nearly 49.7 percent of the
total demand in 2012. Budding demand
for modifed PTFE and expanded PTFE
is pushing the demand for PTFE at a no-
table pace. Filled PTFE is comparatively
consuming less quantity of PTFE but the
growth in demand is anticipated to be
signifcant due to increasing penetration
of Filled PTFE applications in various
end user industries.
The market is further segmented and
projected for major regions such as Asia-
Pacifc, North America, Europe, and
ROW, which is further segmented for
key countries in each region. They have
used various secondary sources such as
encyclopedia, directories, and databases
to identify and collect information useful
for this extensive commercial study of the
PTFE market. The primary sources, ex-
perts from related industries and suppli-
ershave been interviewed to obtain and
verify critical information as well as to
assess the future prospects of PTFE.
Competitive scenarios of top players
in the PTFE market have been discussed
in detail. We have also profled leading
players of this industry with their recent
developments and other strategic indus-
try activities. These include: Dongyue
Group Ltd. (China), E.I. Dupont de
Nemours and Company (U.S.), Gujarat
Fluorochemicals Ltd. (India), Asahi
Glass Co. Ltd. (Japan), HaloPolymer
and OJSC (Russia).
Ceresana Reports Global
Demand for Butanol
Increased
Butanol and its derivatives are important
ingredients of many paints and varnishes.
While the use of solvent has, in general, de-
clined due to a shift towards water-borne
paints and varnishes, products based on
butanol can also be used as coupling agent
in water-borne formulations. Global de-
mand for butanol raised by, on average,
2.7 percent p.a. between 2005 and 2013.
Butanol is a higher alcohol that is
mainly produced through oxo-synthesis
of propylene. Almost 12 percent of total
global butanol output is directly used as
solvent. The largest share, amounting to
almost 1.5 million tons in 2013, however,
is consumed in manufacturing acrylate,
which is used in water-borne paints but
also detergents, adhesives, and textiles.
The second most important application is
the production of acetate, which is used
as solvent in automotive coatings or as in-
gredient in a range of cosmetics and phar-
maceutical drugs. Glycol ethers based on
butanol are highly suitable for the use as
solvent in water-borne varnishes, given
their miscibility with water. Also, phthal-
ates manufactured from butanol are play-
ing an important role as plasticizer in the
processing of PVC.
Besides the commercial use of bu-
tanol in chemical applications, this
alcohol is also deemed to offer signifi-
cant potential for the biofuel industry.
Already existing and progressing tech-
nologies to produce biobutanol by the
fermentation of biomass are increas-
ingly becoming the center of attention.
Butanol offers a range of advantages
when compared to conventional bio-
fuel made from ethanol: Butanol has
higher energy content and is easily
miscible with diesel and gasoline. In
addition, it can be combusted in con-
ventional Otto-cycle engines without
modifying the engine. Bioethanol,
however, already is an established bio-
fuel in Europe and North America, and
a changeover of production facilities
to manufacture biobutanol would be
expensive. Another possibility is con-
verting the bioethanol that is being
produced into butanol. Adequate tech-
nologies, however, are still in the initial
stages of development.
In 2013, Chinese processors con-
sumed about the same amount of bu-
tanol as Western Europe and North
America taken together. Ceresana fore-
casts demand for butanol on the satu-
rated markets of Western Europe and
North America to increase by only
0.4% and 0.5% p.a. respectively until
2021. As development in industrialized
Asian countries such as Japan will falter

as well, China will expand its
dominating role on the market
for butanol even further. The
main motor of this growth is
the construction sector, followed by the
growth markets wood processing and
the automotive industry. Demand for
butanol on the part of Chinese proces-
sors is projected to amount to almost
1.64 million tons in 2021.
Contested Export Markets
Faced with an only moderate increase of
demand or even a decline of market vol-
ume in many countries during the past
eight year period, competition for access
to exports markets in emerging coun-
tries increases. China is one of them, but
also smaller markets such as Brazil. Yet
as these countries already possess suf-
fcient production capacities to satisfy
domestic demand or are currently in-
creasing them, an increasing surplus of
butanol on the world market is the re-
sult. According to the analyses of experts
at Ceresana, this trend will continue on
the medium-term, resulting in a decline
of capacity utilization; also, prices will
not increase as rapidly as they had in the
past. Countries reporting an excessive
output of butanol are the USA in par-
ticular, exporting 213,000 tons of buta-
nol in 2013, but also Russia, Malaysia,
Taiwan, and South Africa.
The Study in Brief:
Chapter 1 is a description and analy-
sis of the global market for butanol.

Coating in India
Henkel recently launched Loctite Safe
Coat, an anti-corrosion coating for the
agricultural sector in India. Henkel said
that it launched Loctite Safe Coat to ad-
dress the problem of corrosion of the ro-
tors of submersible pumps used for water
irrigation, harnessing the opportunity to
offer an easy-to-use anti-corrosion coat-
ing that offers twice the service lifetime
of any competitor solution. This low vis-
cosity, solvent-based coating is ideal for
spraying with a conventional air spray
gun at a low pressure of 1-2 bar.
The coating also provides a pinhole-
free, ultra-smooth and glossy fnish with
a short cure cycle, signifcantly improv-
ing the surface and reducing the friction
that causes boundary drag. Typical ap-
plications include submersible pump ro-
tors, tube sheet resurfacing, condensers,
cooling pump impellers, butterfy valves
and cavitation pumps, line tanks and
chutes, resurfacing and repair of rudders
and pintle housings, and line chemical
containment areas. This Henkel product
offers the market both persuasive techni-
cal benefts and improved cost effciency,
making it a highly viable solution for
many a potential user.
Sherwin-Williams Unveils
Loxon XP IR Refective
Coating Offering Cooler
Interiors
Sherwin-Williams has launched Loxon
XP IR refective coating. Loxon XP IR
Refective Coating integrates concrete
and masonry protection with advanced
infrared technology that refects solar rays
back into the atmosphere. The result is
lower exterior surface temperatures, less
heat gain, reduced building energy con-
sumption, cooler interior temperatures
and increased occupant comfort with an
attractive appearance that withstands the
elements, according to the company.
Because Loxon XP IRs advanced
infrared technology contains pigments
that refect ultraviolet (UV) rays back
into the atmosphere, it helps reduce a
buildings exterior surface temperature,
especially if its exposed to constant sun-
light. It also cools interiors, helping to
reduce energy use.
Loxon XP IR provides the same high-
build performance and outstanding pro-
tection as Loxon XP for concrete, cement
composition panels, concrete block,
brick and stucco. These high-build coat-
ings provide a breathable, elastic fnish
that helps bridge hairline cracks and can
be applied in one less coat compared to
conventional masonry coatings, saving
time and labor. They are tough enough
to withstand wind-driven rain, heat, hu-
midity and salt air, and resistant to high
alkalinity, efforescence, chalking and
fading. In addition, Loxon XP IR and
Loxon XP allow for quick application,
durability and an attractive fnish and
may be applied to surfaces with a pH of
up to 13.

Arizonal Polymer
Flooring Launches
StatRez Static Control
Coatings
Arizona Polymer Flooring (APF), a man-
ufacturer of high-performance fooring
products and concrete coating systems,
has launched StatRez Static Control
Flooring Systems, which are designed to
protect areas requiring static dissipative
or conductive fooring.
The static control properties of
StatRez prevent electrostatic damage to
products and equipment, limit the abili-
ty of personnel to build up a charge and
quickly remove a charge from a person
or equipment.
This line of ESD coatings is ex-
tremely durable, versatile and relative-
ly easy to apply, said APF president
Daniel Owen. It further positions APF
as the go-to manufacturer for a wide
range of dependable and high-quality
fooring systems.
StatRez is commonly used in mili-
tary/aerospace/aircraft service areas,
electronics manufacturing and assem-
bly areas, solvent storage rooms, pack-
aging lines, processing areas, clean
rooms, pharmaceutical industries and
hazardous industries (dust or explo-
sion hazards). It is more durable than
ESD tile and is not dependent on rela-
tive humidity.
Three systems are available offering
a range of static dissipative and conduc-
tive protection:
StatRez PC 350/350C System a
versatile, two-coat 100% solids ep-
oxy system commonly used in elec-
tronics and packaging lines.
StatRez PC 225/225C System a
three-coat, UV-stable polyurethane
system with excellent chemical and
abrasion resistance. Its commonly
used in aircraft hangars.
StatRez PC 925/925C System a
two-coat epoxy novaloc system de-
signed for areas requiring extreme
chemical resistance or complete pro-
tection from acids. Its commonly
used in solvent storage areas.
PPG Unveils POWERCRON
EPIC E-coats
PPG Industries industrial coatings busi-
ness has introduced POWERCRON EPIC
electrocoats (e-coats), a line of next-
generation, cationic-epoxy products that
will be used for the frst time in North
America by MetoKote Corp., Lima,
Ohio, and a key PPG partner.
Powercron EPIC e-coats offer several
performance and environmental advan-
tages over competing products because
they are formulated with metal-free cata-
lyst technology developed and patented
by PPG.
Powercron EPIC e-coats cure at tem-
peratures as low as 320 F, compared to
350-375 F for existing cationic-epoxy
e-coat products, which enables manu-
facturers to reduce energy costs and re-
lated carbon emissions. They also can
achieve more uniform flm builds on
complex parts because of the coatings
improved throwpower.
The metal-free catalyst technology
also enables Powercron EPIC e-coats to
be formulated without tin, bismuth and
other heavy-metal-based compounds. As
a result they will comply with emerg-
ing regulatory trends, such as new
REACH (Registration, Evaluation and
Authorization of Chemical Substances)
mandates in the European Union that
will restrict the use of certain tin-based
compounds beginning in January 2015.
John Shaffer, PPG product manager,
electrocoat, said, Global reserves of
bismuth are uncertain, and other heavy-
metal compounds are increasingly subject
to restrictive environmental mandates.
Powercron EPIC e-coats will help manu-
facturers comply with evolving global
environmental standards, protect them
from cost volatility and enable them to
manufacture products more effciently.
Joe Tirado, MetoKote global direc-
tor, technology and quality, said his com-
pany is pleased to partner with PPG on
the launch of Powercron EPIC e-coats.
We believe these e-coats represent a
new generation of coatings solutions that
will help global manufacturers maintain
compliance with global environmental
standards while providing them with the
excellent corrosion protection and fnish
quality they have come to expect from
PPG products.
PPG offers a comprehensive array
of electrocoat, pretreatment, liquid and
powder products for metal fnishing to
manufacturers in numerous industries.
In addition to providing a broad range
of industrial coatings and a full spectrum
of color choices, PPG backs its products
with industry-leading technical expertise
delivered through an international cus-
tomer support network. With 50 years of
experience in e-coat, PPG offers solutions
to some of the industrys toughest corro-
sion challenges.

According to an article in Plastic News,
Chinas insulation material market is pro-
jected to grow more than nine percent an-
nually through 2016. Axalta is positioned
to expand its industrial coatings offering
to support customer growth in the region.
Improved insulation materials allow for
new industrial technologies, from minia-
turized electronic components to heavy-
round and rectangular conductors for
large motors, generators or transformers,
with the fexibility, protection and perfor-
mance needed to accommodate the end
users growing needs. In particular, the
sustainable benefts provided by new in-
sulation materials are having a signifcant
impact by decreasing energy consumption
and reducing the environmental footprint
