Main Topic: Exploration of Elements of a Play, Themes & Literary Devices used in Macbeth.
Objectives: SWBAT apply pertinent knowledge about the conclusion of Macbeth through a do-now activity. SWBAT examine the behavioral changes that Macbeth has undergone throughout the course of the play. SWBAT develop understanding of the elements of a play in Macbeth. SWBAT evaluate the themes present in this work. SWBAT analyze important literary devices used in the play. SWBAT reflect on the lesson learned by filling out an exit ticket.
Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.10 - Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2 - Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.1 - Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11-12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.10 - By the end of grade 11, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of the grades 11-CCR text complexity band independently and proficiently. TEC.9-12 - The use of digital tools and media-rich resources enhances creativity and the construction of knowledge.
Materials: Journal, Drawing Comparisons Wkst, Elements of a Play, Themes & Literary Devices PowerPoint, Promethean Board, Pen & Exit Tickets.
Do-Now Journal (12 Min.): 1) Upon entering the classroom, students will take their seats. Promethean Board will be set up with a PowerPoint. After reviewing our learning goals (objectives) for the day, students will respond to the following prompt: Plot Alteration: Re-write Act V of Macbeth. Additionally, describe the rationale behind the changes you make. Do you think your ending will make the play better? Why or why not? 2) While students are completing this journal entry, teacher will take attendance both online and in her grade book. Also, teacher will check the Drawing Comparisons Worksheet, which was for homework. 3) Debrief - Discuss student responses.
Activity Procedure I (15 Min.): Drawing Comparisons Wkst. 1) Teacher will instruct students to take out their Drawing Comparisons Worksheet, which was for homework. 2) Teacher will provide differentiated instruction in asking the students to interactively participate by coming up to the front of the room and writing their answers on the Promethean Board. 3) Teacher will encourage class discussion & evaluation of student responses as a means of further clarification.
Activity Procedure II (25 Min.): Elements of a Play, Themes & Literary Devices in Macbeth PowerPoint 1) Students will be given an Elements of a Play, Themes & Literary Devices in Macbeth packet. 2) The teacher will display the corresponding PowerPoint on the Promethean Board at the front of the classroom. 3) Students will listen to the teachers instruction while taking notes by filling in the blank bullet points on their packet. 4) Additionally, students will be asked to read some of the bullet points which were already provided for them on their note-taking packet. 5) Furthermore, comprehension checks will be included throughout the presentation to ensure student understanding of concepts learned.
Exit Ticket (3 Min): 1) The teacher will pass these out at the conclusion of class. 2) Students will respond to the following prompt which will be printed on the Exit Ticket: Write one question you have about todays lesson. 3) Students must hand this in before exiting the classroom.
