TOPIC: HOW DOES BANGLADESH COPE WITH

FLOODS?
Why does
Bangladesh suffer
from floods?
Because of the extreme poverty of the people who live
there.

What is their flood
action plan?
1. Dams
2. Embankments
3. Flood shelters
4. Flood warning systems
5. Emergency help
6. After-care

Dams
Build dams to control river flow and hold back the
monsoon rainwater in reservoirs. Stored water can be
used for irrigation and to generate cheap electricity.

Embankments
Build embankments and deepen river channels to stop
the river from overflowing. The embankments would be
up to 7 meters high in the urban areas.

Flood shelters
Build 5000 flood shelters in areas at most risk. Would be
cheap to construct and provide a place of safety for
almost everyone. They would be well stocked with food.

Flood warning
systems
To give early warnings & instructions to people as to
what they should do before, during and after the flood.

Emergency help
Medication and other stuff are provided to those in need.

After-care
Food, water, medicines and tents would be available to
people. Help would be given to plant seeds for next years
crops.

SUMMARY: Bangladesh suffers from flooding more than any other
country in the world because of the poverty of its people. Flood action
plans are important and can save a lot of people if they listen to the
instructions and follow the rules.
