The training manual is provided as a reminder to each student of the important
requirements that lead to the successful implementation of GD & T functions with
PCDMIS.ItprovidesbasicexamplesandtechniquesontheGD&TfunctionsofPC
DMIS.
Whatthistrainingmanualisnot!
Itisnotanotherversionofthetechnicalmanual.
Whatistheworkbook?
The workbook provides evidence of competence achieved by each trainee during
thetrainingcourse.Itwillincludeexercisestocheckthatlearninghastakenplacenot
only in the use of the tolerancing on the CMM but also the knowledge and
understandinggained.

Evaluation
Asweallknowevaluationisveryimportant.Theworkbookwillprovideamethodof
evaluatingeachtraineescompetenceandgivethetraineeevidencetotakebackfor
themselvesandtheiremployeroftheirachievementsduringthecourse.
Basedontheresultsobtainedandevaluatedbyyourtraininginstructor,acertificate
willbeissued. Theassessmentofcompetencecanonlybejudgedatthetimeofthe
course. This does not mean that the trainee can be classed as an expert, it is
important for the trainees to implement the techniques they have learned on their
returntotheirrespectivecompany.
Courseevaluation
Hexagonmetrologytakesprideintheservicesitprovidesandcontinuestostriveto
improvethisqualityservice.Itisimportantforustogetfeedbackaboutourservices.
Aspartofthisprocess,wewillkindlyrequestthatoncompletionofyourcourseyou
completeatrainingevaluationform.
During each sessionof the course the students willbe encouraged to participatein
boththetheoreticalandpracticalelements.
Questionsandanswerssessionsfortheaboveelementsandanyotherrequirements
willbeincludedasrequested.

TheFeatureControlFrametabgiveshelpsyouconstructaFeatureControlFrame
(FCF).Itprovidesyouwiththetoolstodefinedatumfeatures,selectthefeatures
usedintheFCFdimension,aneditortodefinethespecificsymbols,tolerances,and
datumsusedinyourFCF,andapreviewareatoseethecurrentstateoftheFCFas
youbuildit.Forinformationonthevariousitemsinthistab,seethelistofcontrols
below:
IDThisboxdisplaysthenamefortheFCF.Youcanedititifyouwantsomething
different.
FeaturesThislistdisplaysavailablefeaturesfortheparticularFCFtype. Some
featuresmayexistinthepartprogram,butarenotavailabletothefeaturecontrol
frame. Forexample,aplanefeatureisnotavailabletoCircularity.PCDMISupdates
thislistafteryouselectthefirstfeature.Thisensuresthatwhenyoucreateapattern
offeaturesfortheFCF,thosefeaturesarecompatiblefeatures.
DatumsTheshowsallthedatumsdefinedwithDATDEFcommands.Itonlylists
datumfeaturesabovethecurrentcursorpositionintheEditwindow.
LeaderLinesThislistshowsthesamefeaturesthatyouselectedfromthe
Featureslist.Eachfeaturehasacheckboxassociatedwithit.Whenyouselecta
checkbox,PCDMISdrawsaleaderlineintheGraphicsDisplaywindowfromthe
FCFtothatfeature.Bydefault,PCDMISinitiallydisplaysallpossibleleaderlines,
butyoucanclearcheckboxestoturnoffleaderlinesaswell.
FeatureControlFrameEditorThisarealetsyouapplychangestotheFCF.You
canselectfieldswiththemouseorbypressingTABandthenENTERtoplacethe
fieldintoeditmode.Ifthefieldiseditable,itwilleitherdisplayadropdownlistof
availableoptions,oritwilldisplayaboxintowhichyoucantypetext.Whenfinished
editingafield,pressENTER,TAB,orclickonadifferentfieldtoexittheeditmode.
PressingSHIFT+TABwillmovebackwardstothepreviousfield.
Whenafieldisemptyashortdescriptionisdisplayedwithbracketsarounditfor
identification. Thesedescriptionscorrespondtothesefields:

DatumDefinitionsThisbuttonprovidesyouwitheasyaccesstotheDatum
Definitionsdialogbox,allowingyoutodefinedatumsforyourcurrentFCFdimension.
FeatureControlFrameOptionsThisareacontainstheCompositecheckbox.
Thischeckboxcontrolswhetherornottheprimarydimensionrowandsecondary
dimensionrowshouldusethesamesymbolinasinglemergedcellthatspansboth
rows.(SeeAppendix)
Ifyouclearthecheckbox,theprimaryandsecondaryrowsdisplaywithseparate
symbols,evenifthesymbolrepresentsthesamething.
ActionsandProceduresThissectiondisplayshintsandinstructionstoassistyou
inbuildingvalidFCFs.
PreviewThissectiondisplaysapreviewoftheFCFwiththecurrentsettings.Itwill
notincludeanyoftheemptyfieldsoremptydescriptionsthatappearintheFeature
ControlFrameEditorsection,forexamplefieldsthathavebrackets,suchas<dat>.
NotesontheFeatureControlFrameEditor
IntheFeatureControlFrameEditorareabeawarethatsomeoftheiconfields,if
theyarenotsupportedwillnotappearforcertaindimensions.Forexample,ifyou
haveCircularitydimension,PCDMISdisplaysthetolerancefield,buthidesany
datumormodifierfields.
Formdimensions(Circularity,Straightness,Cylindricity,Flatness)Thesedon't
supportdatumsormodifies,sothesefieldswillnotappear.Profileinsomecaseswill
fallinthiscategorywhencheckingfor"Form only".But"FormandLocation"for
Profiledimensionsallowsthedisplayofmodifiers.

Tolerancing
ThetolerancingoptionsinPCDMIScanbeofmanydifferenttypes.Thetolerances
canbestandardbilateralvaluesoralternativelyunilateralvaluesincludingthe
implementationofgeometrictolerancing.Itisalsopossibletousethelimitsandfits
optionswhereinterference,clearanceortransitionfitrequirementsarestatedonthe
technicaldrawingorCADmodel.
Alltheseoptionsareavailablethroughthedimensioningmenulocatedfromtheinsert
columnonthemainPCDMIS screen.
AddingDimensions
OverviewDimensions
Onceafeatureorseriesoffeatureshasbeen
measured,itwillbenecessarytodimension
themandapplynominalandtolerance
information.
Featurescanbedimensionedjustaftertheyare
measuredorlaterintheprogram,thechoiceis
yours.
Wheneveryouwishtoaccessthedimension
function,selectDimensionfromthemain
menu.Adropdownlistappearscontainingthe
availableoptions.Selecttherelevantdimension
typeandadialogboxwillappearcontainingthe
variousoptionsavailableforthatdimension.
Therearevariousoptionswhicharecommontoallofthedimensiontypes,wewill
usetheLocationoptionasourexamplewhendiscussingthese.
Thedialogboxcontainsalloftheoptionsrelatedtotheparticulardimension,
includingwhichaxestodisplay,whichtolerancetoapplyandwheretosendthedata
onceitiscalculated.
Thedialogboxisbrokendownintoindividualelementsorframeswhichcontain
relatedoptions,toselectanoptionclickinthecheckboxnexttotheoption.
TheIDboxdisplaysthedimensionID
thatwillbeassignedtothereported
dimension.
TheSearchIDboxallowsyoutolook
foraparticularfeatureinthefeature
list.
TheSelectLast#boxallowsyouto
selectthelast"n"featuresasthe

TheUnitsoptionallowsyoutoreportdimensionsintheunitsofchoice,whichever
UnitsareselectedatthetimethatCreateisclickedwillbetheunitsappliedtothat
dimension.
Thisoptionthereforeallowsyoutomixandmatchthereportedunitsof
measurement.
TheFeatureListlocatedattheleftsideofthedialogboxallowsyoutoselectthe
featureorfeaturesthatwillbereported.
Onceafeaturehasbeenselected,theAxesoptionallowsyoutoselectwhichaxisor
axesaretobereported.
TheTolerancesoptionwillchangedependingonthetypeofdimensionselected,but
thisiswheretheamountoftolerancetobeappliedisinput.
TheDimensionInfooptionallowsyoutomodifytheindividualelementsofa
graphicalreportwhichisattachedtothefeatureasshownonthescreen.Thisdisplay
canbeeditedusingtheEditbutton.
TheOutputTooptionallowsyoutodefinewheretosendthereportedinformation.
TheAnalysisoptionallowsyoutoselectthetypeofanalysistobeperformedonthe
reporteddata.
TheremainingoptionsarespecifictotheDimensiontypeselectedandarediscussed
there.
Location
WhatisaLocationTolerance?
Alocationtoleranceisalsoknownasplusminustolerancingorlimittolerancing.It
involvesdefiningthefeaturesnominalsizeandpositionalongwithapositive
toleranceandoranegativetolerance.
ThismethodgivesasquareorrectangulartolerancezoneasopposedtotheTrue
Positionmethodwhichgivesacirculartolerancezone.

ToaccesstheLocationoptionselectInsert,Dimensionfromthemainmenuand
thenselectLocationfromthedropdownlistofoptions.
ThiswilldisplaytheFeatureLocationdialogboxshownbelowwhichiswherethe
variousoptionsforthereporteddimensionareselected.
AstheLocationoptionisusedforvariousfeaturetypes,thereareseveraloutput
optionsincludedinthedialogboxtomakeitconformtothevariousstandardsaround
theworld.
ForabasicLocationdimensionthefollowingstepsarerequired
1. AssignadimensionnameoracceptthedefaultID.
2. Selectthefeaturestowhichthedimensionwillbeappliedbyhighlightingthem
intheFeatureList.
3. ChecktheaxestobereportedintheAxesoptionsbyclickingontheboxnext
totherequiredaxisoraxes.
4. Ifthetoleranceisthesameforallaxes,makesurethatALLisselectedinthe
Tolerancesoptionandenteravaluefortheplusandminustolerances.
5. DecidewhichUnitsthedimensionwillbereportedin,InchesorMillimetres.
6. Decidewhereyouwanttheoutputtobesenttobyselectingtheappropriate
optionintheOutputTooptions.
7. ClickontheCreatebuttontogeneratethereport.
TheSheetMetalAxesoptionsallowyoutoaddadditionoutputstoyourreportwhich
arepeculiartosheetmetalapplications.
TheLocationOptionsaddfurtheroutputswhendealingwithVectorPoints,Surface
PointsandEdgePoints.
SomeEuropeanapplicationsrequirethattheISOLimitsandFitsbeincorporated
intothelocationcalculationandsothisoptionisincluded.

ReportGraphicalAnalysisThislistdisplaystheoutputfortheFCFinyourreport.
Itusesaformatsuitableforcloseexamination.WhenyouselectOn(orBoth),PC
DMISwilldisplay,inagraphicalformatthatusescolouredarrows,thedeviationof
eachindividualhitfortheFCFusedonthepartinthereport.Thesearrows,withtheir
coloursanddirections,indicatetherelativesizeoftheerror,aswellasitsdirection.
CADGraphicalAnalysisThislistworksthesameastheReportGraphical
Analysislist,exceptthatitdisplaysthegraphicalanalysisinsidetheGraphicsDisplay
window.
ArrowMultiplierTheMultiplierboxletyousetascalingfactorthatmagnifiesthe
deviationarrowsandtolerancezonefortheCADGraphicalAnalysismode.Ifyou
typea2.0value,PCDMISwillscalethearrowstwotimesthecalculateddeviationfor
eachfeaturehit.TheMultiplierboxisusedforviewingpurposesonly,andisnot
reflectedinthetextprintout.
DimensionInfoareaThisarealetsyoucreateaDimensionInfotextboxforthe
FCF.WhenyouselecttheCreateDimensionInfowhenthisdialogclosescheck
box,PCDMISenablestheEditbutton.YoucanclicktheEditbuttontoopenupa
dialogboxthatletsyousetdefaultoptionsfortheDimensionInfocommand
(DIMINFO).SeeEditDefaultDimensionInfoformoreinformation.
WhenyoucreateyourFCF,thedialogboxclosesandPCDMIScreatesaDIMINFO
commandintheEditwindowaftertheFCF.ThisDIMINFOcommanddisplaysall
dimensioninformationintheGraphicsDisplaywindownexttothefeatureselected
fromtheFeaturelistintheFeatureControlFrametab.Italsodisplaysthesame
availabledimensionaxesusedintheEditwindowforthatparticularFCF.
TruePositionareaThisareabecomeavailableonlywhencreatingaTruePosition
FCF.ForotherFCFtypesitremainsgreyedout.Itcontainstheseitems:
AlignmentSometimeswhenyouviewdimensioninformationrelativetothecurrent
alignment,thecalculationsofthedatumscansometimesbehardtodecipher.This
listletsyoudeterminehowthisinformationshouldgetdisplayed:relativetoa
particularalignmentorrelativetothedatumreferenceframe.
FittoDatumsThischeckboxdetermineswhetherornottheFCFusesabestfit
calculationtofindtheoptimalpositionofthedatumreferenceframethatminimizes
theerror.

NominalsandAxesThisportionletsyoucustomizetheoutputbycontrollingwhich
axesPCDMISshoulddisplayinthereportandallowingyoutomanuallytypethe
nominalvalues.
FeatureListThelisttotheleftoftheNominalsandAxescolumnsdisplaysallthe
featuresusedintheTruePositionFCF.SelectaFeatureSetorfeaturefromthislist.
PCDMISthendisplaysthepossibleaxesforthatfeature.
ReportAxisThiscolumncontainscheckboxesforeachaxis.Aselectedcheckbox
sendsthataxistothereport.
AxisThiscolumnlistsavailableaxesfortheselectedfeature.
NominalThiscolumncontainsnominalvalues.Youcanoverwritethembyclicking
onthemandtypingdifferentvalues.
+Tol/TolTheplusandminustolerancecolumnsprovidefieldsintowhichyoucan
typetolerancesforthevariousaxesusedinyourFCF.PCDMISonlyappliesthese
tolerancevaluestoaxesthatrelatetosize,sincetheaxesthatcontrolpositionuse
themaintoleranceintheFCF.
UpdateFeatureNominalThiscolumnletsyouspecifywhetherornotanychanges
youmadetothenominalvaluesshouldgetappliednotonlytotheFCFbuttothe
featureaswell.
