African American advancement during Reconstruction
Photojournalism: The art or practice of communicating news by photographs.
Photojournalism is a form of journalism that uses a picture, or a series of pictures, to tell
a story.

You will be putting together a photo journal for a topic relative to African American
development during reconstruction. At the end of the project we will be discussing the
question:
Was reconstruction a success or failure for African
Americans?
1. Pick a topic:
a. The Black Codes
b. The birth and influence of the Ku Klux Klan
c. The birth and influence of Jim Crow Laws
d. African American advancement during reconstruction
2. You will need to research your topic thoroughly so that you have a general
understanding of how your topic influenced African American development during
reconstruction.
3. Describe your topic in 6-10 Pictures. Each picture should be accompanied by a
full paragraph describing why the picture is relevant to the topic. Where relevant, the
pictures should be in chronological order.
4. Your final photo journal should summarize your topic, describe how your topic had
a significant impact over the reconstruction time period, and show how it influenced
African American development during reconstruction.
5. Your Photo journal should also have a cover page with a creative title, your names,
the date, period number, essential question, and a photo. This photo does not count
towards your 6-10 photos, so you do not need to write a paragraph about the photo.
6. Feel free to be creative! Your photo journals can combine actual pictures from the
time period, political cartoons, or modern day pictures that can be related back to the
topic. You may also include graphs or charts if they present relevant information. You
may also draw pictures for your photo journal.
7. After the last photo slide, you should include a works cited slide with a list of
links to the sources you used.

8. Format:
a. You will be creating your photo journal on Microsoft PowerPoint
b. Each slide will contain one photo
c. Under each slide there is a notes section to each slide. You will write your
paragraph in the notes section.
d. You should have a cover page, 6-10 slides worth of photos, and a work cited
