How does Dalene Matthee Characterize Fiela in the novel Fielas Child?
Dalene Matthee, author of the novel Fielas Child, characterizes the protagonist Fiela
Komoetie as a self-reliant, woman who is also reverent in her faith with God. These
characteristics are especially shown in the novel when she is trying to get Benjamin back from
the van Rooyens. Through figurative language, syntax, and tone, Matthee establishes these
characteristics of Fiela.
Fiela Komoetie is characterized throughout the novel as independent and self-reliant.
Specifically, on page 143-144, the author writes, A Komoetie would rather lie down behind a
bush with his head on a stone than have to ask for help. This implies that she would rather do
things herself and maintain her personal strength than rely on somebody else and seem weak.
The author uses tone to establish this characteristic through using negative connotation of
phrases such as lie down behind... and his head on a stone. Through tone, Matthee implies
to readers that Fiela is a self-reliant person.
Additionally, Matthee characterizes Fiela as a woman of great faith. This characteristic
is seen as an undertone throughout the novel and provides a moral foundation for Fiela. You
couldnt live at odds with GodAnd who but God could watch over Selling.? In this excerpt
specifically, there is polysyndenton which establishes a rushing mood for the reader, which also
correlates with the fact that she is rushing to gain her son back. Faith is a humbling thing for
Fiela, which lessens her pride and boosts her determination and resilience in her search for
Benjamin.
