Keim, Brandon. "What Science Knows About Video Games and Violence." PBS. PBS, n.d.
Web. 24 Mar. 2014.

In this source, Brandon Keim discusses research on video games and violence throughout
the world. He discusses studies done on this topic and even research he has done. He gives
multiple examples and many statistics that are very interesting to see. He discusses his own view
on this topic and what he believes is the truth behind all these studies. He talks about different
types of video games and all the different behaviors certain video games can cause. He also
discusses the effects that some of the research has had on the people being studied.
This article is good for my research because it gives good facts and good research to back
it up. The article has very good information and is easy to relate to on my topic. It did not
mention my culture that I am trying to focus on, South Korea, but I can get more information
about that from other articles.
This source is credible because it backs up all of its facts and all of its statistics and it is
not just a biased source. Of course it has its opinions, but it is not written solely on those
thoughts. It is a PBS article so I know it is credible from that also. Brandon is a freelance
journalist. He covers topics like science, technology, and nature. He has done work on many
different articles for many respected magazines and websites.

Kain, Erik. "The Truth About Video Games and Gun Violence." Mother J ones. N.p., 11
June 2013. Web. 24 Mar. 2014.

This article discussed the correlation of violent video games and guns. It talked about the
different shooter games that are out today and what kids have access to now. It gave some good
statistics and some other discussions from other people and their views on this subject. It also
talked about how South Korea along with Netherlands is among the least violent countries. The
article also discusses how it is difficult to find good research on this topic and it is very true. The
article also discusses laws that are being implemented that are associated with this topic.
This article had some good points and facts but it will not be one of my main sources. It
is a good source, but it is weak in a lot of places. It is credible in some parts but it isnt 100%
credible. I will use some of the parts of this source in my final project though. It talks about guns
which is not really a part of my topic but it did give good mention about South Korea and the
violence rates that are over there.
The article is credible in some parts. It gives good back up to the facts and all the quotes
that are in it.. but is isnt like a PBS article or anything like that. Erik writes many articles about
Video Games: including the industry and culture behind it. He isnt renounced writer with a lot
of credibility, which is a reason why I will not be using this as a main source.

"South Korea 2013 Crime and Safety Report." South Korea 2013 Crime and Safety Report.
N.p., n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2014.

This article is an article that lists the different crime reports that have occurred in South
Korea. It talks about all the different violence and all other crimes that have been committed. It
gives good information about the different violence crimes that have happened over there in the
last year. This article shows how the country is with crime and gives a better view on what I will
be getting into more with this research.
This article will be very helpful to me during my process of beginning this assignment. It
gives good insight to the crime rates and different crimes committed in South Korea. However, it
does not discuss anything about video games. It will still help in the long run to have found this
article.
This article is very credible. It is a .gov website and is straight from government officials.
This is as credible as it gets basically. It gives credibility to all kinds of government officials at
the end of the article.

Rushkoff, Douglas. "The Most Wired Place on Earth." PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2014

This article was very interesting. It was an article about a video interview that happened
in South Korea. Douglas Rushkoff, the interviewer, talked to Jin Young-Soo who is a gamer in
South Korea. He plays a very popular game in South Korea, called Starcraft. This game is
immensely popular over there and is played by millions. This article talked about the troubles
video games are starting to give children in South Korea. It talked about how it took time away
from sleep, school, and even time with family. It even mentioned that deaths have happened in
PC Bangs, an internet caf where kids play together. This article also mentioned how the kids
would go to therapy and counseling for internet/video game addiction and seek help to get their
lives back with their families.
This article/video gives more insight on South Koreas view on video games and how they
are with video games over there. It shows how serious they truly are about video games and how
big of a part they play in the Koreans culture. I honestly did not know it was that bad to the point
where kids die from playing too much. It is actually crazy. The article is strong in many ways, it
gives a whole summary of the video. It does not really talk about video games being associated
with violence in South Korea.
This source is credible. It is a PBS article again, and is from a video interview that was
done professionally and even in South Korea itself. Rushkoff is a professor in the Media Studies
department at The New School University in Manhattan. He is best known for writing and
researching about the cyberpunk culture and video game culture. He has many different articles
and interviews made about these two topics.
Yu, Alan. "U.S. Recognizes A South Korean StarCraft Player As An Athlete." NPR. NPR,
n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2014.

This article talks about South Korean gamers using video games as a job. It talks about
them being classified as athletes and actually getting visas to call themselves athletes. It also
goes to talk about how some South Koreans are going to North American colleges with these
visas, and also how much money they have actually earned in the past couple years. These kids
are making more money in a couple years than the average U.S. citizen does. This really shows
Auten 3
how serious video games can be and how serious South Koreans take these video games. It talks
about how they play Starcraft and League of Legends and make easily 6 digits at tournaments
from it. The matches they play are even televised and broadcasted around the world. The article
talks about how they spend 10-12 hours a day just practicing and getting better at the game to
better themselves for tournaments.
This article is actually extremely helpful. It gives a full perspective on how important
gaming is in South Korea and how big of an impact it can have on teenagers lives over there. It
actually relates to me a lot because I have started playing League of Legends, a game very
popular in South Korea. I can relate to how addicted it can be and maybe someday I can make
money from it too. I have actually made money myself from making Call of Duty videos on
YouTube. I have actually made a decent amount just from playing games in my spare time.
Anyway, this source will help give me good information to use in my final project.
This source is credible from the .org website and also the author, Alan Yu is a professor
at the University of Chicago in Linguistics. He backs up all his facts he states and gives good
quotes in the source.
