Unit: Track and Field (Hurdles) Lesson Focus: Hurdles Equipment: 12 hurdles Play space needed: Leg of the track Safety: One student in a lane at all times while hurdling. All students after they finish hurdling over the last hurdle must clear the track.

Time Task Organization Cues Challenges and Modifications 2 min. Introduction: Review the three phases of the hurdle. The teacher will ask the students what a lead leg and trail leg is. The teacher will also ask one student to physically demonstrate a proper lead leg Students are lined up on the starting line facing the instructors. Cones will designate the starting line. Approach: - 8 steps to first hurdle - Begin horizontal - Start with lead leg Take off:

Once the demonstration is over the teacher will show pictures of athletes performing hurdling properly. -Approach -Take-off -Hurdle Clearance Assistant teacher will demonstrate hurdling over the hurdle. Students must start behind the cones. -Fast lead leg -Drive lead leg -Take off on trail leg Hurdle clearance: -Toe up -Tuck trail leg behind hip 3min 1) The three lanes will be given a signal to begin to clear the first hurdle. Once the student in that lane hurdles over the last hurdle the next person in line will go. Students will focus on getting their lead leg knee height or higher. The students will use the leg they felt most comfortable with last class. 2) Students will go twice at a jogging pace and twice at a sprinting pace. 3) As other students are performing the hurdle the students next in line are responsible for analyzing the quality of movement from the athlete performing. The students will give their peer feedback on either something they did correctly or something they can work on. Students will divide evenly into three lanes and four hurdles per lane. Once the student hurdles over the last hurdle they will clear the lanes and walk on the perimeter of the lanes in order to return to the lines.
