Various elementary production processes:

An assembly process in which interchangeable parts are added to a product in a sequential

manner to create an end product. In most cases, assembly process is a semi-automated system
through which a product moves. At each station along the line some part of the production
process takes place. The workers and machinery used to produce the item are stationary along
the line and the product moves through the cycle, from start to finish. Assembly methods were
originally introduced to increase factory productivity and efficiency.
Eg: Any Car manufacturing (Elaborate)
Note: Apply the concept thought by Mukherjee in POM
Fabrication is that process by which a product is made from raw materials, manufacturing of
materials from a raw form to a an improved form in factories, buildings, carpentry among others.
Eg : Blacksmithing has always involved fabrication, although it was not always called by that
name

Forming
Utilizes material that has been cast
Modify the shape, size and physical properties of the material
Hold and cold forming
Rolling-material passes through a series of rollers, reducing its thickness with ease
Extrusion-Materials is compressed and forced through a die to produce a uniformed cross
section.
Forging-materials is shaped by the controlled application force (blacksmith).
Cold forming and forging- Slugs of materials are squeezed into dies.

Heat Treating Process
Controlled heating and cooling of a material to alter its properties while maintaining its
shape
Properties include: Strength, toughness, machinability, wear resistance, and corrosion
resistance
90% of heat treating is preformed on steel and other ferrous metals
To aid in the manufacturing process, materials can be treated to be weak and ductile and
then can be re-treated to provide high strength.
Can also occur incidentally during the manufacturing process
