Picture Books

The book I chose for this assignment was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written and
illustrated by Eric Carle.

1. What do the holes (through the foods the caterpillar has eaten) do for the
story? Would the book be the same without this feature?

2. Does the texture of these images/illustrations add something to the story
that would be lost if they were simply drawings?

3. What do the shorter pictures add to the story? Would it be as effective if the
pages were all the same length?

4. Are there any themes in this story? If so, what would be they be?
For example, does the book beginning and ending on Sunday have any
significance

5. Does the simplicity of the illustrations make the text easier to understand for
younger children/children who are not able to read?
Should the pictures be more elaborate?
