Writing Objectives

Goals & Objectives Worksheet
You will not be expected to provide course goals and objectives, but this is provided for
you to see the overall context in which 30 minutes of instruction might fit into.

Goals are statements that describe in broad terms what the learner will gain from
instruction. Goals are broad and sometimes difficult to directly measure. The important thing
about goals is that they help you focus on the big and important picture of your course.
Program goals are the expectations of what the learner will gain from the
overall program of study, such as the JD program. Sometimes they are called
standards.
Course goals are the expectations of what the learner will gain from a specific
course. Course goals might be similar to program goals, but would be more specific
to the course. Not all program goals would be covered in one course; selective based
on content.

Learning Objectives
Definition
Description of a performance you want learners to be able to exhibit before you
consider them competent
Identify learning outcomes for students
Determine the cognitive level of a required activity
Guide instructional activities
Models
Two common models of objectives:
o Mager style behavior, condition, criteria
Given an article from a newspaper, students will mark statements with an F
for fact or an O for opinion with 75%
accuracy.
o Gronlund style learning outcome
Differentiate between fact and opinion in newspaper articles.

Program Goals Course Goals Learning Objective(s) -One is sufficient for the final project.

Insert Object into a Word document
Screen shots and directions will be forthcoming.
