Students will gain an awareness of what social media safety is and how social media affects their everyday lives if not used properly. Students will be exposed to social media safety tips such as: adding only friends that you know, only post things that you know you will be comfortable with 5 years from now, dont use social media to vent, and ask an adult if you are not sure of something related to social media safety. Students will learn about consequences of not using social media safely. Students will interact with the school counselors in the lesson to develop an understanding of the importance of social media safety. Time Frame: 20-25 min Procedure: This lesson will start with the school counselor(s) introducing the topic of the lesson as well as giving a brief description of the roles of a school counselor. The class will take a pre-test composed of questions relating to knowledge of social media safety. Classroom rules and lesson goals will then be discussed with the class so that they are clear for the students to understand. The definition of social media will then be presented to the class which will lead to a brief discussion with students talking about what types of social media they currently access and what they use social media for. The lesson will then produce pros and risks to different types of social media and things for students to watch out for when using the internet. An interactive activity will be used to help students become more involved and interested in the lesson, and to help them understand the risks on a more personal level. The school counselors will then share with the class tips on social media safety and there will be a brief discussion about what the students had learned from this lesson. Students will then take the post-test asking the same questions as the pre-test to evaluate what the students learned from the lesson. Evaluation How will mastery of the guidance indicator(s) be evaluated? Students will complete the same assessment (a pre and post test) before and after the lesson. Assessments will be anonymous and will be pre-marked with a number so that school counselors can assess whether students developed an understanding of the lesson or not.
