STATEMENT OF INFORMED BELIEFS SIB 2 Introduction As I progress in this class with teaching not being my career choice I am learning just how important a teachers job is. In the field of social work many of the same tools to become a good teacher can be crossed over to working with clients in social work. In social work as well as teaching we give the person the tools to work with but, in the end it is up to the student/client to be willing and able to use the tools. Students Ability to Learn Many things can affect a childs ability to learn or desire to learn. A family that does not encourage learning can have a negative effect as well as peers and learning disabilities can also have a negative result. Teachers are human some are more effective with certain subjects or different groups of children. Effective teachers have a positive impact on student learning. This must be determined through evidence-based processes. Student learning and well-being needs to be at the center of decisions involving instructional models, and flexibility (Virginia 2013). Teachers Expectations If expectations are set to high a child can be left feeling overwhelmed and this can affect their self-esteem and their performance. Once the teacher has the students zone of proximal development goals can be reached and built upon. This will build their self-esteem because they now know they can reach goals and this will carry on in their lives that they have their ability to reach goals. Students Social Ecology Theory When determining a students ability to learn many things can affect the outcome. Family values are very important if their family does not value schooling the student may not feel learning is important. Teachers can help overcome this in the way they present the subject and STATEMENT OF INFORMED BELIEFS SIB 3 show the student what they are capable of. Peer pressure and the media can also have a positive or negative affect on students wiliness to learn. Cultural Diversity Instruction All behavior is culturally based. The success of students is predicted on their ability to transverse these environments with minimal dissonance. (Cartledge, 2001) Teachers in Americas public schools face a rapid increase in ethic and socio-cultural diversity among their students. Their own attitudes and beliefs can have a large effect on the students learning even if they have the materials to teach them. (Research, 2010) Cultural assimilation would be cheating the students out of the opportunity of learning from people of different cultures. This can also have a positive effect on those from other cultures because they will feel a since of pride in seeing others interested in learning their culture. It can be anything food, religion, art, music or history. Curriculum for All Learners Teacher directed learning is where the teacher teaches the class as a whole whereas, and can work in small groups. Many studies have been done on both curriculums with nether being the best overall results but, there is a greater belief in learner directed being the most relaxed way of learning. Standardized testing is where everyone is given the same test and it gives teachers an idea on where the student is at in their learning but, it is far from perfect because no two people are exactly the same. The universal design for learning (UDL) is a blueprint for designing a curriculum that addresses the diverse needs of all learners. It is flexible and supports access, participation and process for all learners. It includes instructional goals, methods, assessments, and materials; STATEMENT OF INFORMED BELIEFS SIB 4 UDL takes advantage of innovative technologies to accommodate learner differences. Conclusion Teachers now have many more choices and tools available to them than they did just 10-15 years ago. They also have a big responsibility placed in their hands the future of all of own children. They have many tools at their disposal and if they can properly learn how to use them they can take great pride when seeing their students bloom.
