I didnt know what happiness was until that cold evening..

Christmas Eve in the busy city of New York. The air was humid and chilling
to the bone. It was winter break and I decided to return to my grandmas
house for Christmas.
Next station , Grand Central said the feminine voice coming from
the speaker. I took my knapsack , slung it around my shoulder and made
my way across the crowd out of the train station. As usual, I treaded
through the metropolitan maze of New York. Concrete skyscrapers ,
towering into the skies above. The roads were filled with vehicles as
people were eager to be home early. Such a busy yet one of the worlds
most modern city to live in.
I made up my mind to take a shortcut through Park Avenue. As I
walked past on alley, I noticed an old man beside a dumpster. His face
wrinkled , his weary eyes were desperately looking for something to eat.
He wore rugged clothes, torn and ripped . But most shocking of all , he
had no shoes! I have never seen anyone in this modern city with nothing
but bare feet! To make things worst, it was winter and the street were
covered in snow.
My heart sank and I felt so sad to see such a pitiful sight. But what
can I do? I am just a college student , trying to make ends meet with the
little money I have. I cant give him money and I dont have food to offer
him neither. But a big part of me wanted to help him in some way.
Then I got an idea. I opened my knapsack and took out the pair of
thermal socks grandma gave me. I approached the homeless man and I
handed it to him. Merry Christmas ! , I said. The old man looked at me ,
his weary eyes were filling up with tears . He smiled at me , a smile that
had never been worn for a long time. And just two simple words from
him made my day. Thank you , he said with a warm smile.
That moment was a cherishable one for me. To be able to see
happiness in others and to make them feel that way made me realize
what true happiness is. I slowly made my way back to my grandmas
house , feeling proud of myself.
