Standard Three e-portfolios Reflective Narrative Yvette Rivera

My understanding and what Standard Three ,Observing ,Documenting, and Assessing to


Support Young Children and Families means thoughtful, appreciative, systematic observation
and documentation of each childs unique qualities, strengths, and needs. My daily observation
includes watching what children do, what they say, and how I respond. Even though this process
happens quickly, I am aware of its importance. My ongoing observation is an essential part of
connecting curriculum and assessment, and it is the basis for effective teaching. When I observe
I find out what is unique and special about each child. Afterward, I have a basis to build a
positive relationship with each child and for planning experiences that enable the child to
flourish.
My artifact for Standard Three is my PowerPoint presentation, which is based on my
students observation notes, documentation in different forms. Included in my presentation are
several detailed photographs showing childs work, block work, artwork, and interaction with
their peers and myself, the teacher, during play, and learning activities. Each sample of a child at
play and at work reveals a great deal of information about that childs development and learning.
I have collected a portfolio of each childs work, and wrote notes about the context in which the
child was playing or working, and I have placed these notes to the back of their samples. Each
sample includes the date and time included on it, so that others can reflect back and for further
documentation.
When I observed and put together my PowerPoint artifact, I kept in mind the curriculum. The
observation process was systematic and meaningful. I collected objective, factual observation
photos, being familiar with the particular indicators of the widely held expectations for the
children I observed. I focused my photos and PowerPoint presentation on the information I
needed for the evaluation process of the children in my classroom. I used small-group activities
to yield information on particular skills in literacy and mathematics. It helps family members
understand what their children are learning.
My PowerPoint presentation demonstrates my understanding of Standard Three, of
observing, documenting, and assessing to support young children and families. The information I
gained by observing the children and thinking about their skills is the basis for responding to
each child and supporting each childs learning appropriately. Knowing what each child can do
helps me decide how much support a child needs, how many directions a child can handle at a
time ,how well a child plays with others , and a childs level of persistence and curiosity. All this
information helps me decide when to teach, what to teach, and how to teach. I offer experiences
that challenge children.
I will use the knowledge of Observation, Documentation, and Assessment in my future
work in this profession, to teach all children effectively. My PowerPoint presentation shows
knowledge of every child and developed positive relationship that shows children know I care
about them and are genuinely interested in their success. Also included is my purposefully
created classroom community, where all children feel safe, accepted, and competent. As a
teacher, I help children learn important skills and guide childrens learning intentionally ,
whether I am supporting child-initiated experiences or planned teacher activities .I fully know
and understand how to individualize instruction to include all children . My teaching is based on
purposeful observation, and I use an ongoing assessment system to learn about each child and to
plan instruction. I am most effective in my work through my developed partnership with the
childrens families.
