The importance of PDHPE in a primary school setting

Information & Statistics...
It is recommended that children aged between 5 and 18 years do
a MINIMUM of 60 minutes of physical activity every day!
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare suggests
- Only about a quarter of children aged between five and 15 years had at least 60 minutes of moderate
to vigorous physical activity every day.
- 1 in 4 Australian children are obese or overweight
- About 1 in 25 (3.8%) students aged 1214 were smokers, according to the 2008 Australian Secondary School
Students Alcohol and Drugs Survey.
2007 Australian National Childrens Nutrition and
Physical Activity Survey suggests
- There was almost always a greater percentage of active boys than girls
- Only one in three children are physically active every day
- Children now spend more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen (e.g., TV, videogames,
computer).
- A minority of children ate the recommended daily amount of vegetables.
- About 55% of boys and 40% of girls reported drinking at least 2 quantities of 500ml of soft drink every day

Importance of PDHPE and the
Syllabus
Board of Studies NSW , Personal Development, Health and
Physical Education K-6 Syllabus suggests

- The implementation has the potential to contribute to improved and ongoing
quality of life for all children within the community

- Children are encouraged to lead healthy lifestyles living in a way that allows
them the greatest chance of achieving and maintaining mental, physical, social
and spiritual wellbeing

- PDHPE, is not only based on physical education but encourages the importance
of personal development and heath. Children become aware of their personal
health and develop values that will stay with them throughout adulthood
Importance of parental influence..
Parents play a major role in helping their child become
healthy and physically active

- Be a ROLE MODEL and promote healthy lifestyles

- Parents, teachers and schools must work in collaboration to encourage PDHPE
in childrens lives

- Turn off the TV and create time for regular exercise
