Dear Parent/Guardian,

Governor Pat Quinn signed into law House Bill 6193, or Erins Law, on J anuary 24, 2013. This
law mandates that Illinois public schools extend their current mandated educational programs
regarding personal safety, abuse education and prevention curriculum to students in pre-
kindergarten through twelfth grades. The goal of the law is to teach children to avoid situations
that may lead to abuse and to report any instances of abuse they may have endured.

Providing abuse education in schools is not a new initiative. Mandates under the Health Education
Act and Internet Safety Education Curriculum require instruction beginning in sixth grade. Erins
Law simply extends this education into grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.

Beginning this school year, in kindergarten through sixth grade, each school will hold an assembly
which, through scenes that explore safe touch versus non-safe touch, will address the mandates in
Erins Law on an age-appropriate level. This presentation from Imagination Theater entitled No
Secrets is designed to 1) create awareness and encourage children to think about different kinds of
touches and their feelings about touch, 2) discuss the difference between safe and unsafe touches,
and 3) emphasize that if you are touched in a way that makes you uncomfortable, it is not your
fault, and you should tell an adult that you trust.

We will assume that you would like your child to view the performance unless we hear from you
by 5/12/14.

In addition to this performance, Burbank School District 111 Social Workers will be following up
in the classrooms answering any of the students questions. An informational pamphlet will be sent
home with the children on the day of the presentation so that parents can further discuss the topic
of safe touch.

The purpose of this curriculum extension is to proactively build competencies within our students
regarding safety, abuse and prevention while reducing the likelihood that children will be abused,
encouraging them to come forward immediately if they are abused and help children receive
appropriate services in order to lessen long-term negative effects from abuse.

Should you have any question regarding the law or its implementation, please contact your childs
principal or myself.

Respectfully,

Candice Kramer,
Curriculum Director
Burbank School District 111
