CLB 1-4 Listening, Reading & Writing, and Assessment Janet Kan Includes 2 CDs
This book was developed in 3 sections. The first section, Listening Skills, focuses on multi-purpose listening exercises. They require time and repetition. The skills that are developed can then be ap- plied in the various contexts of the second section of the book. The listening exercises include let- ters of the alphabet, numbers, names, licence plates, postal codes, phones numbers, addresses, maps, messages, one-sided phone messages & dictations.
The second section, Reading & Writing, incorporates the use of the skills from section 1, but fo- cuses largely on reading and writing in specific contexts, although there are suggestions for some oral applications to those contexts as well. The reading & writing section includes Invitations, dates, times, answering an invitation (accepting and refusing), notes, telephone messages, letters, ad- dressing envelopes, forms, and greeting cards (phrases and symbols).
The third section, Assessment, contains 13 assessment sheets. Great for PBLA binders. The author also includes an 8 week outline on how to use the lessons.

Lets Move On - Prefix and Suffix Exercises A Four Book Vocabulary Building Series Based on Themes Marilee Carlson Students increase their vocabulary by building upon words they already know. An understanding of prefixes and suffixes increases a students comprehension more quickly than learning individual words in isolation. Each book in this series is organized around groups of prefixes or suffixes that deal with common themes.
Book 1 - Function Book 2 - Negation Book 3 - Absence/Presence Book 4 - Description
The Lesson Plan For Each Unit 1. A basic presentation of the eight parts of speech and their functions in English sentences. 2. The suffixes/prefixes are introduced. 3. The first page of the lesson is filled out together as a class. 4. A matching activity provides further introduction to the suffixes and prefixes. 5. A list of common words that contain the suffix/prefix is discussed as a class. 6. Sentence Practice A. In the cloze activity students choose words from the Word Bank, alter them and complete the sentences. 7. Sentence Practice B gives students a structured opportunity to change an underlined word to a new word with the suffix/prefix and make an altered sentence e.g., Sam bakes pies and cakes. / Sam is a baker. The words to be changed are underlined in Part B of each practice. 8. Sentence Practice C is the same as B but the students are asked to determine on their own which words to change. All of the words to be changed are included in the list found on the second page of the lesson, so students will always be able to refer to the list to see which words in the practice sentences can be combined with the suffix/prefix. 9. Unit Review - Sentence Practice Quiz: Students are presented with sentences from the previous sentence exercises and they are required to change a word to a new word with the suffix/prefix and make an altered sentence. 10. Unit Review - Four In A Row: Students attempt to place four consecutive markers in any direction on the board by giving correct sentences using the words given with a Unit suffix or prefix. 11. Unit Review - Dominoes: Root word and suffix/prefix pieces are paired to make a word. Students can begin with 5 dominoes and take turns constructing some sort of shape (circle, rectangle, house, car) by forming correctly spelled words 12. Unit Review - A Board Game: Players move around the board by making new words that contain a suffix/prefix joined to the word on the card that has been drawn. Depending on the degree of difficulty desired, players can be asked to spell the new word. They can also be asked to use the word in a sentence.
Answer keys are included.

Sophie Wang was inspired by her adult ESL students to develop phonics materials for ESL learners with practical, useful content for everyday English. This is an important distinction; the vocabulary which interests adult ESL learners is different from early education students because of their needs and motivation. Beginner 20 Things Your Beginner Students Need To Know Heather Hovdebo Heather found that before many ESL texts could be used beginner students needed to have a grasp of some basic skills in English. She needed to teach lessons such as following directions, sequencing, numbers, symbols and shapes or names of letters. This is the third book by Maria and Agnes. Body and Ailments +Health and Pharmacy works well with any beginner class, but is ideal for a teacher with a multi-level beginner class. All teachers know the challenge of finding material for a multi-level class. Its difficult to find one workbook to meet the needs of all the students. We created our own material to overcome this problem. Each theme has three beginner levels. Most target vocabulary is illustrated, but in some cases higher level students will be asked to use their dictionaries to define the target vocabulary. The students reinforce the new vocabulary with time-tested exercises. Once the vocabulary is reinforced the students practise their new vocabulary through reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises. A rich variety of exercises will interest and engage your students.
Teachers often wish there was an audio CD with workbooks. They want their students to hear more native speakers of English in their classroom. The audio CD included with this book has four native speakers - 2 male and 2 female. The CD content and track numbers are listed in the Table of Contents. Also look for the symbol seen to the right on the exercise pages. It indicates an audio CD track is available and the track number. Some tracks are dedicated listening exercises, some are audio answer keys and others are alternative tracks for read-a-long or passive listening. If you dont want your students to be passive listeners try this activity. Photocopy the target vocabulary, pass out one word to each student and then play the read-a-long track. Each time the student hears their word they hold it up or they stand up.
In each unit you will find a page of flashcards. These are great for matching games such as memory. Also included are Listening And Speaking Tests. These test vocabulary and sometimes preposition of place. For example, while looking at the grid of illustrations a student may be asked, Is the doctor above the surgeon? The student will need to know the vocabulary and where the illustration is on the page in relation to other illustrations. We have included a preposition of place review sheet and activity in the Appendix. This book includes three adaptations of Romeo and J uliet for beginners. The beginner student only has to learn 96 words to understand the simplest adaptation. And these 96 words are ones that they need every day in their lives! Only three words in the story are not on the most commonly used words list: Romeo, J uliet, and Tybolt. If the students can describe the basic simplified plot of the play with only 96 words, imagine what else they will be able to speak about. This book is ideal for the teacher who has a class of beginner students at a variety of levels. Each of the three adaptations comes with its own vocabulary list and exercises. The exercises include:

Each of the sixteen uplifting, high-interest stories in this book are 100-150 words long and written in about 20 short simple sentences. The author found her students could read simple sentences but were intimidated by the paragraph form of news stories. She presents each story first in a comic strip form - pictures with key nouns and verbs. The second version of each story is in an easy-to-read sentence-by-sentence format, i.e., each sentence is on its own line. Later in each unit your students will read the story in paragraph form. This technique is called scaffolding, the students is successfully eased into paragraph reading, and it works .There are a wide variety of readytophotocopy exercises to reinforce new vocabulary and ideas. Clear pronunciation does makes a difference. This resource book is not for self-help; it requires a teachers diagnosis of pronunciation problems, and use by a teacher with accurate pronunciation.
Each unit has illustrated examples. Exercise A develops aural discrimination of the two targeted phonemes. Exercise B, based on the illustrations, requires the student to decide which phoneme is being used in context. Exercise C uses several phonemes. Exercise D is a literacy exercise which requires students to listen to sentence pairs and chose the correct answer.
The exercises are meant to supplement a variety of suprasegmental teaching techniques. There are 72 units in all, 32 Vowels Units and 40 Consonant Units. .
