"Pain has but one Acquaintance"

By Emily Dickinson
[Analysis]
Pain has but one Acquaintance [1]
And that is Death -- [2]
Each one unto the other [3]
Society enough. [4]
Pain is the Junior Party [5]
By just a Second's right -- [6]
Death tenderly assists Him [7]
And then absconds from Sight. [8]
Poem 1049 [F1119]
"Pain has but one Acquaintance"
Analysis by David Preest
[Poem]
Pain and Death are a close partnership. Pain comes just before Death, who then 'tenderly assists' Pain before vanishing with the dead
person.
