Lesson Goal:
W.2.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and
definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
L.2.2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Students will write a paragraph responding to a prompt that includes an introductory
sentence, details, and a concluding sentence. Students will use correct capitalization,
spelling, and punctuation in the paragraph. Students will use a four-square organizer to
develop their thoughts into a paragraph.
Anticipatory Set:
Review writing a paragraph: beginning with an introductory sentence, adding
details, and ending with a concluding sentence
Introduce organizing writing with a 4-square graphic organizer
Using 4-square organizer to compose paragraph
Review CPCP (capitalization, punctuation, complete sentences, part of question
in answer)
Review using correct formatting when writing a paragraph (including indenting)
Instructional Strategies:
Whole group: introduction and modeling writing process
Independent practice: filling out 4-square organizational chart and writing
paragraph; writing prompt:

Activities:
Whole group:
o Review components of writing a paragraph
Indent
Main idea and details
Punctuation and Capitalization
o Review sounding out words (pounding out words and finger spelling) to
spell correctly
o Writing prompt: If you could choose any animal as a pet, what would you
choose and why?
o Model how to fill out 4-square organizer
Introduction sentence, details, concluding paragraph
Main idea and details support and describe
Only use phrases on 4-square; do not need complete sentences
o Guided practice filling out 4-square with student
o Model using 4-square to write paragraph
CPCP and indenting
Independent Practice:
o Fill out 4-square
o Write rough draft of paragraph on lined paper
Accommodations for Special Learners:
Teacher will provide additional support and assistance to struggling students as
needed when walking around the classroom.
Students who need extra time to complete their paragraph will be given an
extension on their writing time.
Assessment (formal or informal):
Student paragraphs and 4-square organizers will be collected once completed
(Do students use complete sentences, correct punctuation, introduction, details,
and conclusion?)
Teacher observation as students write (Are students working the entire time? Is
handwriting neat?)
