Bellerophon and the Chimera

It is amazing what people are capable of doing when they are determined and hard
working. Even when it seems that the task is impossible, there is always a way. This is
shown in the Greek mythology story of Bellerophon and the Chimera. The purpose of this
myth is to show that even when a task seems impossible, there is always a way to
accomplish the task. In the story, the Bellerophon lived in a castle, but the queen fell in love
with him. The king was upset with this, so he gave a note to Bellerophon to give to another
king, Iobates and it requested that Iobates kill the one who brought it. (Ardagh 27). So
Iobates was then charged with the task of how to kill Bellerophon in a humane way. So
Iobates sent Bellerophon on journeys that seemed impossible. His first task was to kill the
terrible Chimaera. The Chimaera was a fire breathing beast that had terrorized the land for
a long time. To defeat the Chimaera, Bellerophon put a piece of led on a spear and flew at
the beast on his beautiful pegasus. The piece of lead was lodged in the chimaera's throat,
and when it tried to breathe fire, it melted the lead and caused the chimaera to suffocate to
death. (Bellerophon paragraph 7). This story shows, that any task can be done. Even a
task that seems impossible. King Iobates thought without-a-doubt that killing the Chimera
(also spelled Chimeara) would be an impossible task that would surely kill Bellerophon.
Even with these conditions, Bellerophon was still able to succeed in killing the Chimera with
his wits and cunning. The moral of the ancient Greek myth of Bellerophon and the Chimera
is that you can always accomplish something when you work hard and put your mind to it.
