Ancient Greek Life was Modern

When people think of Ancient Greece they think of gods, but there were people that
lived there who were always looking to make life better. The daily life of Ancient Greeks
included technological inventions and sports. The greek people wrote myths because,
Greek myths helped people with their day-to-day life, instead of wondering about the
afterlife(Ollhoff 8). During that time, it was astonishing to think of a different look on the
world. It was amazing to think of something so extraordinary. The people, In most Greek
communities, citizenship was limited to freeborn adult males over the age of either 18 or
21(Garland 68). The 18-21 males were most of the people writing the myths because they
had citizenship. Those males also had, Arranged marriages were the norm in Greek
society, though ammature suitor would negotiate on his own behalf with his future brides
parents(Garland 73). The groom, who was 18-21 around marriage, would ask to get
married to the bride by getting the brides parents to like him. Daily lives were more
interesting than what people thought in Ancient Greece.
Sports played a big role in Ancient Greece because of the Olympics which happened
every four years. The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. at Olympia. The Games
consisted of only one event, a 210-yard sprint known as the stadion. Eventually, longer
races were added( McCabe). The first Olympics had something different, Women were not
allowed to participate in any of the ancient Games, partly because men competed without
clothing. Since the Games took place on summer's hottest days, a lack of clothing probably
seemed like a wise idea( McCabe). Instead of watching their male relatives or friends
compete, women would be part of the ... procession of competitors, judges, and important
guests made its way to the Altar of Zeus, where 100 oxen were sacrificed(The Ancient
Games). Even with the unusual circumstances of men without clothes and 100 oxen being
sacrificed, the Greeks still enjoyed sports more than anything for past time. It is amazing
the Greeks invented the Olympics in 776 B.C and it still is celebrated today.
The Greeks were always looking to make life better and always coming up with new
technology. Since, they grew a lot of grapes, "The screw press had been used to press
grapes and make wine since Ancient Greece"(Jordan). The screw press that the Greeks
made were so good, only a few modern modifications were adapted to make it better. The
screw press is not even close to, "The major technical advance of the early Greek period
was the widespread use of iron. Furnaces were developed that could reach the high
melting temperature of iron. Iron technology had spread throughout The classical world by
about 500 BC"("technology"). Unlike the screw press that took time to spread across
Europe, the furnace spread quickly because of its sensational idea of using heat to melt
minerals. The Greeks invented technology because of their interest in getting past life's
challenges. All in all, the inventions in technology, sports and improvements that the
Greeks made in their daily life, have helped us till today.
