Stainless steel is not a single specic
material it is the name given to a
group of corrosion-resistant steels
containing a minimum of 11%
chromium varying additions of
nickel, molybdenum, titanium,
niobium and other elements may
also be present. The mechanical
properties, corrosion resistance and
behaviour in service of each type of
steel depends upon its composition
and consequently a carefully
considered choice of steel is vital.
Aalco stocks all of the commonly
required forms of stainless steel
including sheet, coil, strip, plate,
bar and sections as well as a full
range of tube, pipe, ttings and
anges. In addition to a
comprehensive range of standard
products, Aalco branches stock
industry specic items and customer
specials with numerous specialist
products and alloys satisfying the
needs of a broad range of
industries. Aalco also provides a
complete range of processing
services spanning: bar, tube & pipe
cutting; plate processing; coil
processing and surface nishing.

Notes
1 Schedules 5S and 10S wall thicknesses do not permit threading in accordance with ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.
2 These dimensions and weights do not conform to ANSI/ASME B36.10M.
The sufx S after the schedule number indicates that the pipe dimensions and weight are in compliance with this stainless steel pipe
specication, ANSI/ASME B36.19M-1985, and not the more general ANSI/ASME B36.10M-1995 specication.
Although this specication is applicable to stainless steel, quoted weights are for carbon steel pipe and should be multiplied by 1.014 for
austenitic and duplex steels, or by 0.985 for ferritic and martensitic steels.

Plate or Table Flanges BS10 Table E 316L
Flanges General Information
A Flange is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other
equipment to form a pipework system. It also provides easy access for
cleaning, inspection or modication. Flanges are usually welded or
screwed into such systems and then joined with bolts.
Flange Types
Weld Neck
This ange is circumferentially welded into the system at its neck which means
that the integrity of the butt welded area can be easily examined by radiography.
The bores of both pipe and ange match, which reduces turbulence and erosion
inside the pipeline. The weld neck is therefore favoured in critical applications
Slip-on
This ange is slipped over the pipe and then llet welded. Slip-on anges are
easy to use in fabricated applications.
Blind
This ange is used to blank off pipelines, valves and pumps, it can also be used
as an inspection cover. It is sometimes referred to as a blanking ange.
Socket Weld
This ange is counter bored to accept the pipe before being llet welded.
The bore of the pipe and ange are both the same therefore giving good ow
characteristics.
Threaded
This ange is referred to as either threaded or screwed. It is used to connect
other threaded components in low pressure, non-critical applications.
No welding is required.
Lap Joint
These anges are always used with either a stub end or taft which is butt welded
to the pipe with the ange loose behind it. This means the stub end or taft
always makes the face. The lap joint is favoured in low pressure applications
because it is easily assembled and aligned. To reduce cost these anges can be
supplied without a hub and/or in treated, coated carbon steel.
Ring Type Joint
This is a method of ensuring leak proof ange connection at high pressures.
A metal ring is compressed into a hexagonal groove on the face of the ange to
make the seal. This jointing method can be employed on Weld Neck, Slip-on and
Blind Flanges.

Hygienic (also sometimes called
Sanitary) Tubes and Fittings are
used in environments that require a
clean and sanitary ow of uids.
Applications include food & drinks
processing, breweries, dairies and
pharmaceutical, medical & biotech
plant. All tubes are produced to
ASTM A270 in stainless steel grades
304 and 316, and are usually
supplied in the annealed condition.
Aalco offer three different external
surface nishes on the tubes:
Descaled, Dull Polished and Semi-
Bright Polished. Bright Polished
can also be supplied if required.
Internally, tubes are bead rolled and
free from crevices and bug traps to
eliminate contamination and
facilitate easy cleaning.
If smaller sizes are required, Aalco
offer a range of cold drawn
seamless tubes with a hygienic bore.
For larger sizes, Aalco offer welded
tubes produced to DIN 2463. Aalco
can also supply Pharmaceutical
Quality tubing to ASME BPE 1997
with a highly polished internal
surface nish of <20 Ra and O.D.
surface nish of <30 Ra.
To complement the hygienic tubes,
Aalco supply a range of welding
ttings to BS4825, in grade 316
stainless steel. The ttings are
supplied with a similar nish to the
tubes with which they are intended
to mate. The range includes:
90 & 45 degree elbows
(1800 available upon request)
Concentric & eccentric reducers
Equal, pulled, reducing & swept
tees
Y-pieces and sprayballs.
Aalco also offer a range of Unions
with which to connect the various
tubes together. The most popular
types supplied include:
R.J.T. (Ring Joint Type): A sanitary
tting, produced to BS 4825
Part 5, primarily used where
tubes are frequently disassembled
for cleaning.
I.D.F. (International Dairy
Federation): Produced to ISO 2853
and BS4825 Part 4. A crevice-free
tting used where pipelines
remain permanently in place.
S.M.S. (Swedish Metric System):
A Scandinavian tting used when
tubes require minimal dismantling.
DIN 11851: Popular throughout
Europe, these can be offered in
sizes compatible with metric and
imperial tubes.
DN: Danish Fittings.
S.R.J.T.: A modied RJT, normally
used with larger tubes.
Clamp: Popular in the U.S. and
increasingly so in Europe, the
clamp union offers a rapid, yet
leak-free method of assembling
and disassembling tubes without
the use of a tool.
All unions except for a clamp union
comprise four parts: a nut, male,
liner and seal. Clamp unions
comprise 2 ferrules, a clamp and a
seal. Blanks are available to suit
union parts if there is a requirement
to close off a pipeline.
To complement the range of
hygienic tube and ttings, Aalco
also supply a range of tube-xings
with which to support pipe systems,
a range of anges for connecting
tubes if sterility is less critical, and
a broad variety of actuated and
manual valves and plugcocks.
Fabrication facilities are available
to provide customers with non-
standard and bespoke items.

EGMO bio-pharm ttings are
fabricated from stainless steel 316L
(1.4404) for sulphur corrosion
resistance, and for carbide-
precipitates-free welds. To ensure
smooth automatic welding, weld-on
ttings are produced from special
316L, specied with a controlled
sulphur content of 0.005<S<0.017.
Only bright annealed sanitary
tubes are used, meeting ASTM

There are ve classes of stainless
steel: Martensitic, Ferritic, Austenitic,
Duplex and Precipitation Hardening.
Martensitic types may be
strengthened and hardened by heat
treatment, but the Ferritic steels,
which in general have lower carbon
and higher Chromium contents, do
not respond in this way.
Ferritic stainless steels contain
chromium usually in the range
11 to 18%. They are magnetic,
have moderate corrosion resistance
and are not susceptible to stress
corrosion. Austenitic stainless steels
contain nickel as well as chromium,
and are sometimes referred to by
the generic title 18/8, i.e. 18%
chromium, 8% nickel, although the
actual composition may vary widely
from these gures. They are non-
magnetic and cannot be hardened
by heat treatment, although they
strain harden rapidly when cold
worked.
All stainless steels except hardened
Martensitic steels are ductile and
therefore can be formed, but the
Austenitic types are outstanding in
this respect. They are also amongst
the most highly corrosion-resistant
materials available to the designer
and engineer. Duplex stainless steels
combine the optimum properties
of austenitic and ferritic types.
They contain 18 - 26% chromium
plus 4.5 to 6.5% nickel and have
good resistance to stress corrosion
cracking. Precipitation hardening
stainless steels may be martensitic,
semi-austenitic or austenitic.
They combine the heat treatability
of normal martensitic grades
with the corrosion resistance of
austenitics. They are available in bar
form for the production of heavy
duty engineering components.
Specifying nishes for
stainless steel at
products (sheet and plate)
Introduction
Surface nishes for stainless steel
sheet (coil, strip) and plates, are
specied in EN 10088-2:1995.
'Stainless steels Technical delivery
conditions for sheet/plate and strip
for general purposes.
The standard identies both ex-mill
hot and cold rolled nishes and
special nishes, as value added
nishes to achieve specic aesthetic
effects.
Most of the nishes available have
a surface that provides a high
standard of corrosion resistance, up
to the limit of the compositional
potential of the particular grade.
The coarser nishes may limit the
corrosion resistance of the steel in
severe applications, where the
particular grade is operating in
conditions close to the limit of its
corrosion resistance.
In numeric or quantitative terms this
is very difcult to dene and is often
a matter of judgement.
EN 10088-2 surface nishes
Table 6 of EN 10088-2 denes
nishes for both
Ex-mill Hot Rolled Finishes (1)
Ex-mill Cold Rolled Finishes (2)
Special Finishes
The denitions of surface nish do
not attempt to express surface nish
in terms of the surface topography
achieved in terms of Ra values.
The standard uses a coding system
based on the manufacturing
process.
A full denition is shown in the
standard, with appropriate notes in
terms of:
Type of process route
Surface nish
To precisely dene a special nish
for a particular application where a
specic aesthetic texture or
appearance is required usually
involves close consultation with
specialist nishers, as surface
characteristics can vary.
Once the grade of nishing grit has
been dened, the nal acceptance
of special nishes is often done by
using reference 'swatch' samples.

Aluminium is the worlds most
abundant metal and is the third
most common element comprising
8% of the earths crust. Its
incredible versatility makes
aluminium the most widely used
metal after steel, with world
production around 20 million
tonnes per annum. The versatility
stems from a unique combination of
properties that combine lightness,
strength, durability and corrosion
resistance with good thermal and
electrical conductivity. A wide range

Machining
We stock aluminium round bar in three machining alloys:
Alloy 6082 T6 Machines well and, with chip breakers, produces swarf
in short tight coils.
Alloy 2011 T3/T6 Often referred to as FMA (Free Machining Alloy),
this is produced especially for use on automatic lathes. It offers
exceptional machinability at high speeds and forms ne chips which
are easily removed. It is particularly suitable for components with
complex, detailed or extensive machining and can often replace free
machining brass without tool changes.
Alloy 6262 T9 This may be used in place of Alloy 2011 in applications
requiring higher corrosion resistance and better anodising response.
It has excellent machinability and surface nishing characteristics.

Aluminium can be easily formed by
all the main production processes
and all alloys are easily formed,
welded and joined. It can be
extruded into the most complex of
shapes allowing screw xings, snap
t jointing and attractive design
features. It can be drawn to achieve
the most exacting of tolerances
and to specic levels of hardness
for the most critical of applications.
Then nally it can be hot or cold
rolled to provide a multitude of
thicknesses and widths from
cooking foil to heavy plate.
Aluminium can be surface rolled to
give many attractive, decorative
and functional patterns. These
include popular patterns such as:
stucco, checkmate, treadplate and
many more. Aluminium responds
well to a variety of nishing
methods; painting and anodising
are the two most popularly used.
Each provides an attractive and
highly durable nish. These
processes can be applied either as a
post manufactured operation or as
an integrated part of the semis
production process.
Aluminium is available in a range
of alloys giving properties suitable
for an ever-increasing number of
applications. Major recycling
programmes make a signicant
contribution to the preservation of
the environment. Only 5% of the
energy required to smelt primary
metal is used when recycling,
which also avoids the problems of
waste disposal and dumping.
Whilst contributing signicantly
to protecting the environment,
aluminium maintains a leading
position in terms of material
selection by being the most cost
effective solution for many
industrial and consumer
applications.

A large number of copper alloys
have been developed for a wide
variety of applications. A range of
brasses based on alloys of copper
and zinc offer properties such as
high corrosion resistance, high
tensile strength or suitability for
hot-stamping whilst free machining
brass sets the standard of
machinability by which all other
metals are judged.
Bronzes and gunmetal based on
alloys of copper and tin offer a
combination of properties such as
high strength, hardness and wear
resistance. Copper-nickel alloys
offer a combination of seawater
corrosion and erosion resistance
with good strength and ready
formability.
Material Selection Criteria
Some of the criteria commonly considered
in the selection of copper and copper-based
alloys are shown below:
Material Properties
Strength (tensile, proof or shear)
Corrosion resistance
Ductility
Hardness
Thermal conductivity
Impact resistance
Electrical conductivity
Fatigue resistance
Magnetic permeability
Effect of temperature on properties
Wear resistance
Tolerances on dimensions
Consistency of properties
Material specications
Production Considerations
Machinability
Formability
Availability
Initial cost
Ease of joining
Ease of nishing
Value of process scrap
Quality assurance
Marketing Considerations
Appeal to user
Packaging costs
Lifetime reliability
Total cost
Unforeseen problems
Total lifetime costs (and residual value)
In comparison with most other materials
copper and its alloys score well when the
above are considered. Because of the many
years of experience of usage that are
available, the likelihood of unforeseen
problems is remote.
In this brochure you will nd material of all
types with a balance of these properties to
suit most applications. Choice of alloy type
may be helped by use of the following
examples of a few of the many
combinations of properties and applications
of copper-based materials.

Those who are already familiar with
aluminium and its alloys will have
recognised that many of the properties
possessed by both metals are similar. The
major differences are:
Copper and Copper Alloys
Better machinability
Stronger across range
Easier to join
Some alloys have a better combination of
properties
Twice the conductivity
Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys
Lighter
Can be anodised
Copper
highest conductivity electrical
of any common conductors
metal
excellent ductility heat exchangers
excellent corrosion water tubes
