The term morality can be
used either 1) descriptively to
refer to some codes of conduct
put forward by a society or, a.
some other group, such as
religion or b. accepted by an
individual for her own behavior
or 2) normatively to refer to a
code of conduct that, given
specified conditions, would be
put forward by all rational
persons.

Personal
Interpretation

Ethics, to me, are more universal
than morals and values. Ethics
apply to any individual
regardless of their personal belief
system. Ethics are an expected
set of actions and behaviors
applied by individuals for the
betterment of society.
I believe morals are more
individualized and encompass
a more specific belief system.
Morals set an ideal form of
conduct one can use to shape
their behaviors and thoughts.
My interpretation of values is the
most individualized of all three
principles and is based upon an
individuals priorities in life and
personal experience. Our
chosen values are how we
navigate and apply ethics and
morals.
Implications in
School
Environment
I do believe ethics have a place
in a school environment, as I
believe ethics and
professionalism are closely
related. Even more so in schools,
educators should be expected to
model those universal behaviors
that make this world functional
and sophisticated.

I think morals, of the three, are
the most difficult to exist in a
school system. With morals
unique to the individual, public
schools cannot push particular
agendas, but rather teach
students they have the ability
to determine their own morality
and the consequences to
those decisions.
What an individual values is
communicated in their actions
and therefore, regardless of
intention, will exist in schools. The
decisions leaders and teachers
make on a daily basis
communicate what the
organization values as a whole
as well as the individual. I
believe educators are obligated
to help students understand how
to shape their lives and actions
around their values without
telling them what to value.
