Mask Artist Statement

The theme of my mask is completely based on origami, and a hint of my vietnamese
culture. It shows my identity, because I tend to vent my emotions through folding paper. I used it
with my mask, because its just part of my life, and nothing can take that away. I selected this
theme because I found that its a way to show people who I really am, the mask is made with
things that make me, me. I communicated this theme through using colors and where I place the
origami that I folded. The mask was painted a purple color that I tinted with a black and matte
medium to express a very dark-like medium. The matte medium was used because in Viet art, it
tends to have this flat, non-three dimensional design. The hands, however, are complementary to
the mask and are yellow but tinted with white. It shows that my hands are what makes origami,
which clears my head whenever dark emotions tend to take over. The yellow was also mixed
with a matte medium, not a gloss medium. I created multiple mini cranes, and orderly placed
them on the cheek and cheek bone to give the effect of it spreading like a disease. I used lucky
star paper as replacement of a forehead, or possibly hair. The mask is also set in front of an
origami rose to show that its really beautiful in any way.
