Dr. Sylvest suffered four and one-half years with an extremely painful inflammatory disease for which he has a genetic marker. The disease was considered incurable. It was not controlled by medication. After Dr. Sylvest reached the point of suicidal depression, he finally surrendered and sought another way--a spiritual way. Within nine months of his surrender, he was completely well and returned to a happy life. The change was so dramatic that his first wife did not believe at first that it was he. She wondered if he were a walk-in. His spiritual search continued, leading to a change in his professional life. He added holistic primary care medicine and spiritual teaching to his practice, in addi- tion to pathology. Dr. Sylvests first book, The Formula; Who Gets sick; Who Gets Well; Who is Unhappy; Who is Happy and Why, describing his experience, was published in 1996 and has gone through three printings. His second book, The End of Fear; The Path to Freedom with The Formula, which in addition to new information includes the information pre- sented in his first book, is now available. Interest in his work has led to lecture tours across the country and abroad.
Dr. Sylvest attended LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, finishing first in his class, did a clinical intern- ship at Parkland Memorial Hospital of Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, served in a surgery clinic for the Public Health Service in Washington, D.C. and practiced emergency medicine at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Maryland. He completed his pathology training at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Sylvest served as a pathologist on the staff of Johnston-Willis and Chippenham Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Holistic Medical Association. He served as the director of the Institute for Higher Healing where he practiced holistic primary care medicine. He served as medical director of Laboratory Corporation of Americas Richmond laboratory and as associate medical director of Bostwick Laboratories, Inc. He is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists. He has also participated in the integrative medicine curriculum at the VCU Medical Center.
