SIS hosts annual KORCOS conference By WILLIAM SON
Every year, a school in South Korea takes full responsibility of the Korea Council of Overseas School (KORCOS) International Conference. The theme of this years conference was Innovation in motion; Educating and Changing the World. With the objective to learn and share new viewpoints, delegates specializing in different areas shared ideas and methods of effective teaching at SIS on March 14.
I learned a lot from this conference, said Tim Henkels, teacher from Chadwick International School. Last year, the conference was more focused on the educational aspect and what it is we had to teach students. However this year, like the theme is, I was able to share innovative strategies that I thought was useful, and gave a lecture under the name of Frequent Flier Tips. It was all about tips educators should keep in mind, if their teaching career was like an airplane ride.
Regardless of the successful outcome, during the six months of preparations with a new facility, SIS faced many hardships while planning to host this conference.
Facility had been a problem, said Irene De Shazo, admission administrator. It is true that we were happy to have a new facility in order to host this conference, but we are having around a thousand delegates here at our school. We were able to find enough classrooms to have the teaching sessions, but it was a concern till the end on where we should have the opening and closing ceremony. [Having it in] the gym was a possibility, but for safety reasons and liability problem, we decided to choose a different location.
As this event is national, not only did staff members of SIS get involved, but also members of the KORCOS organization got involved. For these members of the KORCOS organization involved in the planning of this years conference, an unexpected problem occurring at any moment of the conference kept them worried.
It was great having the conference at SIS, said Soleiman Dias, director of admissions KORCOS president. Everybody was worried about having problems with the facility, but there turned out to be no such problem. Also, due to having more rooms for delegates to present and share ideas than previous conferences, it allowed all of the delegates to have to a wider variety of options of different courses to choose from, which inevitably led to better quality.
Despite the hardships during the preparation of this years KORCOS conference, delegates felt satisfied and the conference reached a successful end. Faculty members responsible in coordinating this years conference gave a sigh of relief.
Everything ended up well, said Irene De Shazo. All of the problems regarding facility were resolved. This was because the entire faculty members tried hard with full effort to make this event successful. Not only that, the passion and enthusiasm from the delegates involved also had key impact. Whenever the staff members around the school went around the conference rooms to check the progress, seeing smiles and composure amongst the teachers allowed us to feel prouder and created the urge for us to try even harder. Therefore, every part of this conference had a critical role in the success of this event.
