Distributive Property

Multiplying a sum by a number is the same

as multiplying each addend by the number
and adding the two products together

Example: 6 x 57=(6 x 50) + (6 x 7)

Monday, November 18, 13
Associative Property

Changing the grouping of addends or

factors does not change the sum or
product.

Example: (4 + 2) + 10 = 4 + (2 + 10)

Commutative Property

Changing the order of addends or factors

does not change the sum or product.

Example: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3

How to simplify

4(7x - 3) + 2x

First you would have to box or circle the

numbers in common

4(7x - 3) + 2x

Then you would add the common numbers

12-9x Thats it!

Solving Equations

7x - 10 - 9x = -13

First step to solve this is subtract 7x and 9x.

-2x -10=-13

Then you need to get rid of the 10 by adding 10 on both

sides.

-2x=-3

Repeat step 4 by dividing 2 on both sides

x=1.5 DONE!

Solving Equations

5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6

The rst step to solve this equation, you need nd LCM, and
get rid of the denominator (6)

5x + 2x - 3 =11

Then would combine the 5x and 18x.

7x - 3 = 11

7x = 14

Then you would isolate the variable by dividing 20 to both

sides.

x=2 DONE!

Solving and Graphing

2 </= x/5

First you need to isolate the variable by

multiplying 5 to both sides.

10 </= x

How to Graph

Solving and Graphing

-4x + 4 >/= -8

The rst step is to isolate the variable by

subtracting 4 from both sides.

-4x </= -12

Then you need to divide -4 on both sides.

x </= -3

Open and Closed
Circles

Closed circled means that a variable part of

the equation.

Open circles means that the variable is not

part of the equation.

Bike

Chris wants to buy a bike that costs $160. If

she saves $12 each week, what is the fewest
number of weeks she must save in order to
buy the bike

t=160

12x

12 x 13= 156

x= 13 weeks

Homework

Mark worked on math homework less than

1/3 the amount of time that his did. If Mark
spent 25 minutes on his math homework,
how much time did his brother spend on
his math homework.

25x

25 x 3

75 minutes (1 hour 15 min.)

Equation

One third of a number, decreased by thirty-

six, is at most twenty-two.

1/3x-36</=22

Then add 36 to both sides.

1/3x</=58

Multiply 3 to both sides.

x</=174
