Annotated Bibliography

A bibliography is a list of sources (articles, journals, Web sites, etc.) one has used for
researching your topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited"
depending on the style format you are using.

An annotation is a summary and evaluation of your source. It will answer the following
questions:

Summary: What is the topic of the article/source? If someone asked you what the article
is about, what would you say?
Evaluation: How was this source useful to you? How did it help you shape the
argument that your city has transformed site and situation?

When completing your annotations, keep in mind:
Only annotate sources that contribute to the development of your project and help you
gain an understanding of your topic. Leave sources not useful on your citation list.
When printing your final bibliography, you can omit sources not useful.
Sources of visual and oral materials (video, photos, graphs, maps) should also be
included in your bibliography and annotate.
Each source on Noodletools must contain an annotation of 2-3 sentences answering the
questions listed above on summary and evaluation.

Here is an example of a citation with an annotation:
CRACRAFT, JAMES. "St. Petersburg." In Europe 1789-1914: Encyclopedia of the Age of
Industry and Empire., edited by John Merriman and Jay Winter, 2075-80. Vol. 4. Detroit,
MI: Charles Scribner's Sons, 2006. Accessed May 8, 2014.

St. Petersburg served as a capital of the Russian Empire from 1713-1918. This
encyclopedia entry discusses the founding of this Baltic port city highlighting Tsar Peter
the Great's contributions to its development. This general source is important as it gave
key events and important people in St. Petersburg's early years and allowed me to
understand the difficult process of transforming swamp lands into the "Paris" of the
North.

Important notes about the Bibliography when completed:
Download Bibliography into Word.
Be sure to spell check your bibliography.
Remove all URLs from the final version.
Upload the annotated Bibliography onto your website.

Annotations are detailed and include a summary and evaluation

Wikipedia or Google!), or a source preapproved by the teacher.

17-16 points
10 sources or more are cited (may have minor errors) and annotated
Sources are relevant to the topic but may be redundant
Most annotations include a summary and an evaluation but may lack details
Almost all sources come from Subscription Database, sources listed on Ms. Semples project
page (not Wikipedia or Google!), or a source preapproved by the teacher

15-14 points
Fewer than 10 sources cited (may have minor errors) and annotated
Sources are somewhat relevant to the topic but may be redundant
Annotations are not complete, missing summary and/or evaluation
Not all sources come from Subscription Database, sources listed on Ms. Semples project page
(not Wikipedia or Google!), or a source that is credible
13 or below points
Fewer than 10 sources cited. Missing annotations
Sources lack relevance to the topic
Few of the sources come from Subscription Database, sources listed on Ms. Semples project
page (not Wikipedia or Google!), or a source that is credible
