groupsofspecificcountiesthoughhaveno legal
status.
Theprovinceswouldbesupplantedbythepresent
systemofcountiesaftertheNormanoccupationinthe
twelfthcentury.TheIrishwordforprovince,"cige",
means"fifth",reflectingtheoriginaldivision.
